Quick answer. Plastic is not one material, and this listing is the proof. SLPW-0001 to SLPW-0050 mixes polypropylene, polycarbonate and acrylic, and those three behave differently at temperature, under solvents and in the hand. So the question to ask on every line is which polymer, and is this particular item autoclavable - because autoclavability here is stated per item rather than across the range. Get those two answers and the rest of the specification follows; assume them and you will autoclave something that was never meant to go in.
Ray Export's science lab plasticware listing runs from SLPW-0001 to SLPW-0050 in alphabetical order. Most items are moulded in polypropylene, which is lighter than glass and autoclavable, and the range covers vessels and funnels, cryogenic storage, molecular model sets, microbiology consumables and animal housing.
| Group | Examples from the listing |
|---|---|
| Vessels and bottles | Aspirator bottles in polypropylene, autoclavable (SLPW-0003), beakers with good clarity and chemical resistance (SLPW-0006, SLPW-0007), carboy (SLPW-0010), heavy duty vacuum bottle (SLPW-0041), magenta box (SLPW-0048) |
| Measuring and reaction ware | Burette with transparent acrylic body, leak-proof stopcock and self-lubricating PTFE plug, individually calibrated (SLPW-0009), two-piece Buchner funnel (SLPW-0008), plain dessicator (SLPW-0030), Kipp's apparatus (SLPW-0044) |
| Cryogenic storage | Cryo boxes in polypropylene and polycarbonate (SLPW-0022, SLPW-0023), cryo racks, coders and vials including an internal-thread vial (SLPW-0024 to SLPW-0027), ice bucket (SLPW-0042) |
| Molecular and crystal models | Atomic model sets with coloured balls and connectors for demonstrating compounds (SLPW-0004, SLPW-0005), crystal model set (SLPW-0028) |
| Microbiology and sample handling | Immunology plates (SLPW-0043), L-shaped spreader (SLPW-0045), Coplin jar (SLPW-0029), MCT box and twin rack (SLPW-0049, SLPW-0050), laboratory tray (SLPW-0046) |

No, and that is the single most important thing to check. Autoclavability is stated per item rather than across the range, because the range mixes polymers. Polypropylene items take the usual 121 deg C cycle; the acrylic burette body does not, and polycarbonate ages with repeated cycles. Read the item entry before you put anything in a load, and tell us at the quotation stage which items have to be sterilised so we can confirm each one in writing.
Both are listed (SLPW-0022 and SLPW-0023) because they answer different needs. Polycarbonate is clearer and more rigid, so contents and labels read easily through the lid and the box holds its shape in a crowded rack. Polypropylene is more chemically resistant and more forgiving of repeated rough handling. Tell us the storage temperature and whether the boxes sit in the liquid or vapour phase, and we will recommend between them.
SLPW-0009 is an acrylic body with a leak-proof stopcock and a self-lubricating PTFE plug, and it is individually calibrated. The point of it is that it will not shatter, which matters in a teaching laboratory where a broken glass burette is both a hazard and a repeat purchase. Glass remains the right choice for solvents that attack acrylic and where the highest accuracy class is required. Ask for the calibration class and the stated tolerance so you can compare it against the glass alternative.
Not across the board, and it is worth being clear where the line falls. Plastic is lighter, it does not shatter, and in polypropylene it autoclaves - which makes it the better answer for storage, sample handling, cold work and anywhere a dropped vessel is likely. No plastic matches borosilicate glass for solvent resistance, for optical clarity that survives years of cleaning, or for direct heating on a flame or hotplate. The sensible split is plastic for handling and storage, glass where heat or aggressive chemistry is involved.
Catalogue number, capacity and quantity for each line, and a note against any item that must be autoclaved. For the cryogenic items add the storage temperature and the phase. For the model sets state the syllabus level, since that decides which set fits. If you are mixing plastic and glass in one order, say so, because lead times on the two differ and we would rather tell you that up front than hold the whole order for one line.
SLPW-0004 and SLPW-0005 are ball-and-connector atomic model sets for demonstrating compounds, and SLPW-0028 is a crystal model set. What decides whether a set fits your syllabus is the atom count, the colour convention and which bond angles the connectors allow, so ask for those three rather than ordering by name. A set that cannot make the specific molecules on your syllabus is an expensive box of parts.

Polymer behaviour is described here at the level of standard laboratory reference practice, as guidance for specifying, and is not a product claim. The polymer, autoclavability, capacity tolerance, calibration class and model-set contents of any specific item will be confirmed in writing on the quotation before an order is placed. Note that this listing is displayed in alphabetical order rather than by catalogue number, so SLPW codes do not appear in sequence on the page. No price is quoted here; prices depend on specification, quantity and destination and are issued as dated written quotations.
