Science Teaching Equipment for Schools

Quick answer. If you have arrived here looking for help equipping a school science laboratory, the staged plan below is the most useful thing we can give you - what to buy first, what to buy next, how many of each, and what a quotation must state before you accept it. Start with the safety provision; nothing else is bought until that is in place.

And a declaration about this category itself, because you will notice it. The records in this listing are not distinct products. They are variations on a phrase - "Science Teaching Equipment", "Science Lab Equipments", "College Lab Equipments", "School Science Equipments", "Laboratory School Products", "Elementary School Science Lab Equipment", "Middle School Science Lab Equipment" - about sixty-five of them, none of which names an actual item with a specification. We have flagged the whole category for consolidation, and we would rather tell you that than let you work through seven pages of listings looking for a product that is not there. The real equipment is in the ranges linked throughout this page.

Equip in this order

1. Safety, and this is not a stage you can defer

Everything else on this page is optional in a way that this is not. Before any apparatus is ordered, a science room needs:

  • Eye protection for every student in the largest class, not for half of them. A laboratory where goggles are shared or rationed is one where they are not worn. This is the single cheapest and highest-value purchase in a science department.
  • An eye-wash provision that can be reached in seconds from wherever chemicals are used, and that staff have actually tried.
  • A fire blanket and the correct extinguisher, mounted where they can be reached without crossing the hazard, and inspected.
  • A first-aid kit, checked and restocked on a date rather than when something is needed.
  • A spill kit and a decided procedure - who does what, where the absorbent is, and where the waste goes.
  • Ventilation adequate for what will be done in the room, and a decision about what will not be done in it.

We say this on a commercial page knowing it delays the interesting part of the order. A department that buys a showpiece demonstration apparatus before it has goggles for every student has inverted its priorities, and the first accident will make that argument far more expensively than we can.

2. The room: services, furniture and storage

What a laboratory can teach is bounded by what the room provides, and these are hard to retrofit:

  • Bench tops that resist what will be spilt on them, and enough bench length per student that a class is not working elbow to elbow - crowding causes accidents.
  • A sink with a drainer, and water at the benches if the budget allows.
  • Electricity at the benches, with a residual current device, and enough sockets that extension leads are not strung across walkways.
  • Gas, or a decision not to have it - see heating below, because that decision changes the apparatus list.
  • Secure, ventilated chemical storage, lockable, with incompatible materials separated and a register of what is held. This is a legal requirement in many jurisdictions and a sensible one everywhere.

Our school lab and furniture range covers the benching, and that page sets out the worktop and services questions in more detail.

3. Measurement: the highest-value apparatus in the building

If a department has limited money and wants the most teaching per unit of it, this is where to spend. Every topic in every science subject involves a measurement, so measuring equipment is used every week of the year by every class, while a specialised demonstration apparatus may be used twice a term.

  • Balances - and more of them than feels necessary, because weighing is the bottleneck in every practical that involves it. Specify the resolution you actually need rather than the finest available; an over-sensitive balance in a draughty room is slower to use, not more accurate.
  • Measuring cylinders in a range of sizes, because measuring 20 ml in a 500 ml cylinder is a lesson in how not to measure.
  • Thermometers, in quantity, with the range the syllabus needs - and spares, because thermometers break.
  • Stopclocks, one per group.
  • Rules, metre rules and a vernier or micrometer for length.

4. Heating, and the gas question

Heating apparatus follows directly from whether the room has a gas supply:

  • With gas: burners, tripods, gauzes, heat-resistant mats, tongs and clamps. Cheap, fast, familiar, and the flame is itself part of several lessons.
  • Without gas: hotplates or electric heaters. More expensive per bench, slower to heat and slower to cool, and they remove the flame from the teaching - but they need no gas installation, no cylinder handling and no naked flame in the room, which in some settings decides the matter. If there is no gas supply, say so at the enquiry stage and we will quote the heating accordingly rather than sending burners that cannot be used.

5. Subject apparatus, in the order the syllabus needs it

Only now does subject-specific equipment make sense, and the useful rule is to buy the apparatus for the topics you teach every year before the apparatus for the topics you teach occasionally. Glassware and chemicals for the chemistry practicals; microscopes and prepared slides and models for biology; electricity, optics and mechanics kits for physics; and the rock, mineral and earth science sets where earth science is taught.

6. Showpieces, last

There is a place for the impressive demonstration apparatus that makes a subject memorable, and that place is after the preceding five stages. It is also worth asking, before buying one, how many times a year it will be used and by whom - because a showpiece that only one member of staff can set up gets used while that person is there and then stops.

How many of each? The ratio decides the teaching

This is the question most quotations never ask and most purchases get wrong.

  • One set per pair of students is the practical target for anything students should do themselves. At that ratio everyone handles the apparatus.
  • One set per four works for apparatus that is expensive or needs supervision, with the honest consequence that in each group of four, two will watch.
  • A single demonstration set teaches watching, not doing, which is a legitimate choice for a hazardous or costly experiment and a poor one for a core practical.

So tell us the class size and how many groups you want working at once, and we will quote quantities against that. Six well-equipped stations usually produce more learning than one impressive one, and a department that specifies by ratio rather than by item ends up with a laboratory that works.

And budget the consumables as a recurring line from the start: chemicals, filter papers, slides and coverslips, batteries, markers, thermometers and glassware breakage. A capital purchase with no consumable budget stops working in its second year.

What a quotation must state before you accept it

We hold ourselves to this and we would encourage you to hold every supplier to it, including us. An item named without its specification cannot be compared, cannot be checked on delivery and cannot be tendered against:

  • Capacity or range - a balance's capacity and resolution, a thermometer's range, a cylinder's volume and graduation interval.
  • Material - which glass, which plastic, what the bench top is.
  • Quantity, and whether the price is each or per set, and what the set contains item by item.
  • What is not included - the accessories, consumables and services the item needs in order to work.
  • Whether a figure is nominal or guaranteed.

If a quotation lists "science lab equipment" as a line item, send it back. That is also, in fairness, exactly the defect in this category of our own catalogue, which is why it is flagged above and why we are correcting it.

What to tell us when you enquire

  • The age range and syllabus, and the subjects taught in the room.
  • Class size, and how many groups should work simultaneously.
  • What the room already has: benches, sink, electricity, gas, ventilation, chemical storage.
  • Whether safety provision is already in place - if not, we will quote it first.
  • Your recurring consumables budget, if there is one, so we can advise what is sustainable.
  • Destination country, supply voltage and frequency.

The ranges this page refers to: school lab and furniture, geography lab models, meteorology and earth science, educational charts, whiteboards and classroom boards, advanced physics experiments, microscopes and slides. The full educational kit and educational lab equipment categories list everything.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this category have no actual products in it?

Because its records are variations on a search phrase rather than items with specifications - about sixty-five of them, all meaning "science lab equipment for someone". We have said so plainly rather than leaving you to page through them, and the category is flagged for consolidation into the real ranges, which are linked throughout this page. If you tell us what you are equipping we will quote actual items with actual specifications.

What should a school buy first?

Safety provision: eye protection for every student in the largest class, an eye-wash provision, a fire blanket and extinguisher, a first-aid kit, a spill kit and adequate ventilation. Then the room - benches, sink, power, storage. Then measuring equipment, which is used by every class every week. Then heating. Then subject apparatus. Showpieces last. We know that order delays the interesting part of the order, and we recommend it anyway.

How many sets of apparatus do we need?

One per pair of students for anything they should do themselves; one per four where the apparatus is costly or needs supervision, accepting that two of the four will watch; and a single set only where you intend a demonstration. Tell us your class size and how many groups should work at once, and we will quote quantities - six well-equipped stations usually produce more learning than one impressive one.

We have no gas supply. What changes?

The heating, and it is worth saying at the enquiry stage. Without gas you need hotplates or electric heaters: more expensive per bench, slower to heat and cool, and the flame disappears from the teaching - but no gas installation, no cylinders and no naked flame. Tell us and we will quote heating that can actually be used in your room rather than burners that cannot.

What is the most useful apparatus per rupee spent?

Measuring equipment - balances, measuring cylinders in several sizes, thermometers in quantity with spares, stopclocks, and rules. Every topic in every science subject involves a measurement, so these are used every week by every class, while a specialised demonstration apparatus may be used twice a term. Buy more balances than feels necessary; weighing is the bottleneck in every practical that involves it.

What should we insist a quotation states?

Capacity or range, material, quantity and whether the price is each or per set, what the set contains item by item, what is not included, and whether each figure is nominal or guaranteed. An item named without its specification cannot be compared, checked on delivery or tendered against. If a quotation says "science lab equipment" as a line item, send it back - including ours.

Key takeaways

  • Safety first, and completely. Eye protection for every student in the largest class comes before any apparatus.
  • The room bounds the teaching. Benches, sink, power, gas or not, and secure ventilated chemical storage are hard to retrofit.
  • Measurement is the highest-value apparatus - used every week by every class. Buy more balances than feels necessary.
  • Specify by ratio, not by item. One set per pair for anything students should do themselves.
  • Budget consumables from the start, or the capital purchase stops working in its second year.
  • Reject a quotation that names items without specifications - capacity, range, material, quantity, and what is not included.

Notes on this listing, published rather than hidden: this category contains approximately sixty-five records whose names are variations on a keyword phrase rather than products with specifications - "Science Teaching Equipment", "Science Lab Equipments", "College Lab Equipments", "School Science Equipments", "Laboratory School Products", "Elementary School Science Lab Equipment", "Middle School Science Lab Equipment" and similar. We have recommended that the category be consolidated and the records either given real product identities or removed, and we have written this page as buying guidance rather than as a product listing because that is the honest use of the address. The guidance above is general good practice in equipping a teaching laboratory, not a specification: safety requirements, chemical storage rules and ventilation standards differ by country and institution and must be confirmed against your own rules. Everything we quote will carry capacity, range, material, quantity and exclusions in writing.
