Whiteboards, Chalkboards and Noticeboards

Quick answer. About twenty records coded WBB-0001 upwards: interactive digital whiteboards, school chalkboards, noticeboards, magnetic and non-magnetic whiteboards, planner boards, music boards, reversible classroom boards and mobile boards. Three things decide whether a board is still good in ten years, and the price list does not mention any of them: the surface, the mounting and the light. The surface decides whether the board ghosts and stains - and the difference between the two common surfaces is the difference between a board that lasts two years and one that lasts twenty. The mounting decides whether it is usable by the people in the room. And the light decides whether half the class can read it at all.

Surface: the one specification worth paying for

Two surfaces dominate, they look identical when new, and they behave completely differently after a year of daily use.

Melamine or laminateVitreous enamel (porcelain) on steel
NewWrites and wipes perfectlyWrites and wipes perfectly
After a year of daily useGhosting and staining. The surface is slightly porous, dry-erase ink works into it, and shadows of yesterday's writing stay behind. Cleaning harder accelerates itUnchanged. The surface is glass fused to steel - non-porous, and it cleans back to new
MagnetsNo, unless a steel backing is specifiedYes, because the substrate is steel
Where it belongsOccasional use - a meeting room, a planner board, a seldom-used classroomAny room used daily. It costs more once and less over its life

So the recommendation is direct: for a classroom in daily use, specify vitreous enamel on steel and nothing else. The cheaper surface is a false economy on a board that is written on five hours a day, and ghosting is not repairable - once the surface has absorbed the ink, the board is replaced, not restored.

One clarification worth having, because it causes confusion on orders: "magnetic whiteboard" does not mean the writing surface is magnetic. It means the board has a steel layer behind the surface, so magnets stick to it. A non-magnetic board is usually the same surface on a non-steel backing. If you want to hold paper up with magnets - and most teachers do - specify magnetic, and remember that porcelain-on-steel is magnetic by construction.

Mounting: height, wall and whether it stays still

  • The wall has to carry it. A large porcelain-on-steel board is heavy, and it needs fixing into masonry or into a timber batten spanning the studs - not into plasterboard with cavity anchors. Ask us for the mass of the board you are considering and give it to whoever is fixing it, before delivery day.
  • Mount for the shortest user, not the tallest. A board mounted at adult shoulder height cannot be used by younger students or by anyone in a wheelchair, and the lower part of it is the part a class can actually reach. A board mounted lower, with a step for the teacher to reach the top, serves everyone; mounted high it serves one person.
  • A reversible board must lock. A board that pivots is excellent - two surfaces in one frame - and useless if it swings while being written on. Ask specifically how it locks in each position, and test it on delivery.
  • A mobile board needs floor space and locking castors. Four castors that lock, not two; and measure where it will stand when it is not in use, because a mobile board parked in a doorway gets moved by being pushed on its surface.
  • Specify a pen tray and check it is continuous. A tray with gaps loses markers down the back of the board, which is where markers go to die.

Light: gloss is the enemy of the back row

This is the specification nobody checks and the one that produces the complaint "we cannot read the board from the side". A glossy surface reflects, and in a room with windows along one wall or a bright light above the board, a high-gloss board produces a reflected glare patch that makes part of the surface unreadable from part of the room - and it moves as the sun does, so it is intermittent and gets blamed on the handwriting.

Two practical rules:

  • For a room with strong daylight, specify a matte or low-gloss surface, and if possible mount the board on the wall at right angles to the windows rather than opposite them.
  • If the board is also a projection surface, it must be low-gloss. A projector on a glossy whiteboard produces a hotspot - a bright patch of lamp reflected straight back at some of the audience - and no amount of adjustment removes it. Boards intended for projection are made with a matte finish for exactly this reason; ask for one if the projector will be used on the board rather than on a screen.

Interactive boards: the honest version

An interactive whiteboard is a computer peripheral, and that is the whole of its advantage and the whole of its risk. The advantage is real - annotation over any content, saving what was written, drag-and-drop, and resources shared between teachers. The risk is equally real and is rarely discussed at purchase:

  • The hardware outlives the software support. A board five or six years old is frequently a perfectly good surface with a driver that no longer installs on current computers. At that point the interactivity is gone and what remains is a board of unknown surface quality.
  • It depends on one computer, one operating system version and one piece of software. Ask what happens when the laboratory's computers are replaced, and get the answer in writing.
  • Ask about the pen. Is the board touch-sensitive or pen-only? What does a replacement pen cost, and will it still be available in five years? A pen-only board with a lost pen is a wall.
  • Ask what the warranty covers, and specifically whether it covers the touch layer, which is the part that fails.

The alternative worth considering, which reduces our sale and lasts longer: a good porcelain matte whiteboard, a projector or large display, and a document camera. That combination does most of what an interactive board does, each part can be replaced independently, and the whiteboard still works when the computer does not - which, in a teaching room, is the specification that matters most. Where a department wants interactivity, our advice is to buy it in addition to a good conventional board rather than instead of one.

Chalkboards, and the other printed surfaces

The chalkboard has not been superseded, and it is worth saying so: chalk is cheap, it never dries out mid-sentence, it is visible from the back of a large room, and a chalkboard cannot ghost. Against that, chalk dust is a genuine problem - it affects people with asthma, it settles into computers and instruments, and in a laboratory it gets into equipment. So: chalkboards for large general teaching rooms where dust is acceptable, whiteboards where there are computers, instruments or dust-sensitive people.

The planner, music and notice boards are the same surfaces with a permanently printed grid or stave, and that permanence is the thing to check: the grid cannot be changed later. Before ordering, confirm that the number of columns matches your actual timetable, or that the stave arrangement matches what is taught. A printed board that nearly fits is used once and then ignored.

Finally, the consumables, which are the running cost: markers, erasers and the correct cleaner. Alcohol-based cleaners are fine on porcelain and will damage a melamine surface - one more reason the surface choice matters. And the classic accident has a real fix: permanent marker on a whiteboard is removed by writing over it with a dry-erase marker and wiping both off together. Teach it to the whole department; it saves a board a year.

What to tell us when you enquire

  • How many hours a day the board will be written on - this decides surface.
  • Whether magnets must stick.
  • Whether a projector will be used on the board, and where the windows are relative to it.
  • Wall construction, and whether you need the board mass in advance for the fixings.
  • For mobile or reversible boards: floor space, and how it must lock.
  • For printed boards: the exact grid or stave arrangement required.
  • Destination country and the route into the room - large boards do not go round corners.

Frequently asked questions

Why has our whiteboard gone grey and shadowy?

It is ghosting, and it means the surface is melamine or laminate rather than porcelain. The surface is slightly porous, dry-erase ink works into it over months of daily use, and shadows of old writing stay behind. It is not repairable and cleaning harder makes it worse. For a room used every day, specify vitreous enamel on steel - it costs more once and less over its life, and it cleans back to new indefinitely.

Does a magnetic whiteboard have a magnetic surface?

No - it has a steel layer behind the writing surface, so magnets stick to it. A non-magnetic board is usually the same surface on a different backing. If you want to hold paper up with magnets, specify magnetic; and note that porcelain-on-steel boards are magnetic by construction, because steel is the substrate the enamel is fused to.

Can we use a whiteboard as a projection screen?

Only if it is low-gloss. Projecting onto a glossy whiteboard produces a hotspot - the lamp reflected straight back at part of the audience - and no adjustment removes it. Boards intended for projection are made with a matte finish. If the projector will be used on the board rather than on a separate screen, say so with the enquiry and we will quote a matte surface.

What height should a classroom board be mounted at?

For the shortest users rather than the tallest. A board mounted at adult shoulder height cannot be reached by younger students or by anyone using a wheelchair, and the reachable lower portion is the part a class actually uses. Mount it lower and give the teacher a step for the top - that serves everyone, while a high board serves one person.

Is an interactive whiteboard worth it?

It depends on how long you need it to last. The capability is real, and the risk is that the hardware outlives the software support: a board five or six years old is often a good surface with a driver that no longer installs. Ask what happens when your computers are replaced, what a replacement pen costs and for how long, and whether the warranty covers the touch layer. A porcelain matte board plus a projector and a document camera does most of the same work, can be replaced piece by piece, and still works when the computer does not.

Our student wrote on the board with a permanent marker. Is it ruined?

Almost certainly not. Write over the permanent marker with a dry-erase marker and wipe both off together - the solvent in the dry-erase ink lifts the permanent ink. It works on porcelain and usually on melamine, and it is worth teaching to the whole department. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which will damage the surface permanently and achieve less.

Key takeaways

  • Vitreous enamel on steel for any room used daily. Melamine ghosts within a year and ghosting is not repairable.
  • "Magnetic" means a steel backing, not a magnetic surface - and porcelain-on-steel is magnetic by construction.
  • Low-gloss if there is daylight or a projector. Gloss glares, and a projected image on gloss hotspots.
  • Mount for the shortest user and give the teacher a step; and get the board mass to whoever is fixing it before delivery.
  • An interactive board's hardware outlives its software support. Buy one in addition to a good conventional board, not instead of one.
  • Printed grids are permanent. Check the columns or staves match what you teach before ordering.

Notes on this listing, published rather than hidden: every product name in this category ends with the padding phrase "For Whiteboard Lab", which produces the record "School Chalkboard For Whiteboard Lab" - a chalkboard described as being for a whiteboard laboratory. It is the clearest single demonstration we have found that these suffixes were applied mechanically rather than written by anyone, and we are removing them across the catalogue. The names also do not state the surface type, which is the specification that decides the life of the board - we are adding it. Surface type, magnetic backing, gloss level, dimensions, mass and all other specifications will be confirmed in writing on the quotation; ask for the mass before arranging fixings, and verify everything before tender submission.
