Quick answer. Decide first between pulsed ranging and continuous-wave Doppler, because they are different experiments needing different hardware, measurements and floor space. Of the three codes, only RT-0002 says which it is: a Doppler system, so a speed-measurement experiment. RT-0001 and RT-0003 are not described, so ask of each whether it is pulsed or continuous wave. If a department can buy only one, Doppler is the cheaper, more reliable demonstration with a clean quantitative result, while pulsed teaches ranging, resolution and the radar equation but needs space and a faster oscilloscope. Settle the room and the frequency authorisation before ordering.
Three items are listed here: RT-0001 Radar Training System, RT-0002 Doppler Radar Training System and RT-0003 Radar Trainer Lab. Only one of the three names tells you what it teaches. Radar divides into two quite different experiments, pulsed ranging and continuous-wave Doppler, and they need different hardware, different measurements and different amounts of floor space. Establish which principle each code demonstrates before comparing prices, and settle the room and the frequency authorisation first, because those two can stop the practical even after the equipment arrives.
| Principle | What the student measures | What the laboratory must provide |
|---|---|---|
| Pulsed radar: range | Time between transmitted pulse and echo, converted to distance; range resolution against pulse width; the effect of target size | A clear run between antenna and target, targets that can be placed at known distances, and a way to display short time intervals |
| Continuous-wave Doppler: speed | Frequency shift of the return against target velocity, and direction of travel if the system resolves it | A target that moves at a known, repeatable speed, and a means of reading a small frequency difference |
A radar trainer transmits. Ask the supplier for the operating frequency, the transmitted power, whether the emission is pulsed or continuous, and the duty cycle. Then take those figures to your national spectrum authority and confirm either that use in a teaching laboratory requires no licence or that an exemption applies to the band and power concerned. This is the buyer's obligation, not the supplier's, and it is worth doing before the purchase order rather than after delivery.
While you have those figures, ask the supplier what separation distance they specify for people working near the antenna and ask for the basis of that figure. Two working rules belong in the practical sheet regardless: nobody looks into an open waveguide, a horn aperture or any antenna feed while the source is energised, and nobody stands directly in front of the aperture at close range while it transmits. Ask whether the source can be switched off independently of the rest of the system so alignment and wiring can be done dead.
Radar demonstrations fail in small hard-walled rooms, because every wall, bench and cupboard returns an echo and the wanted target disappears into clutter. Before ordering:
Ask which of these the trainer includes and which it expects you to provide: an oscilloscope, and for pulsed work one fast enough to resolve the pulse and the echo separately, which is a real constraint and the question to ask first; a spectrum analyser or a frequency counter for the Doppler shift, since the shift is a small frequency difference and reading it from a time trace is awkward; and any software supplied for display or logging, with the operating system and licence position stated. Ask also whether the system presents a processed display of its own, and if so whether the raw signals are still available at test points, because on a teaching system the intermediate signals are the lesson.
RT-0002 is explicit: it is a Doppler system and therefore a speed-measurement experiment. RT-0001 and RT-0003 are not described, so ask of each whether it is pulsed or continuous wave, which experiments its manual sets out, and whether RT-0003, named as a laboratory rather than a system, is a complete bench with instruments and targets or a collection of the other items. If a department can only buy one, the choice follows the syllabus: a Doppler system is the cheaper and more reliable demonstration and gives a clean quantitative result, while a pulsed system is the one that teaches ranging, resolution and the radar equation but needs the space and the faster oscilloscope.
The experiment manual with expected readings, not just a description of the equipment; the quantity per student group, which for radar is usually one system to a large group; the antenna type and whether it can be rotated or elevated, and whether a pattern measurement is part of the course; spares, in particular the source and any detector; the supply voltage, frequency and plug type for your country; and the warranty. Any frequency, power or range figure quoted is confirmed in writing on the quotation; ask for the test conditions behind it.
Antennas, waveguide components and standing-wave measurement are under Antenna and Satellite Trainers, Microwave Test Benches and Microwave Lab Trainers, with the fuller communication sequence under Communication and RF Trainers. Signal processing of the returns is under DSP Trainers and Kits, and the instruments these experiments need under Testing and Measuring Lab Trainers. Parent range: Training Kits.
Give your room dimensions and your syllabus experiments, and ask for a quote stating the frequency, the transmitted power, the targets supplied and the oscilloscope bandwidth assumed. For example Doppler Radar Training System (RT-0002), one set, with the moving-target arrangement and its speed reference confirmed in writing. Contact Ray Export for prices, manuals and lead times.
Follow the syllabus. A continuous-wave Doppler system measures speed from the frequency shift of the return; it is the cheaper and more reliable demonstration and gives a clean quantitative result. A pulsed system measures range from the time between pulse and echo, and is the one that teaches ranging, resolution and the radar equation, but it needs more space and a faster oscilloscope. RT-0002 is explicitly Doppler. RT-0001 and RT-0003 are not described, so ask which principle each demonstrates and whether RT-0003 is a complete bench.
Possibly, and checking is the buyer's obligation. A radar trainer transmits, so ask for the operating frequency, the transmitted power, whether the emission is pulsed or continuous, and the duty cycle. Take those figures to your national spectrum authority and confirm either that use in a teaching laboratory needs no licence or that an exemption applies to that band and power. Do this before the purchase order rather than after delivery, because authorisation can stop the practical even when the equipment has arrived.
More than most labs expect. Radar demonstrations fail in small hard-walled rooms, because every wall, bench and cupboard returns an echo and the wanted target disappears into clutter. Give your room dimensions and ask what is recommended, and ask the minimum workable range: a pulsed system cannot see a target closer than a distance set by its pulse width. Ask whether absorbing material is supplied or recommended for the walls or bench near the antenna, and whether a corridor rather than a room is the intended setting.
Ask what targets are supplied, of what material and size, and whether one has a known radar cross-section, which allows the range equation to be demonstrated rather than asserted. For a Doppler system, ask what provides the moving target. A rotating disc or a fan gives a repeatable frequency shift and is the usual arrangement; a trolley or a walking student does not give a known speed. Ask whether the speed is adjustable and measured independently, since otherwise there is no reference to check the radar against.
Ask which of these are included and which you provide. For pulsed work, an oscilloscope fast enough to resolve the pulse and the echo separately is a real constraint and the question to ask first. For Doppler, a spectrum analyser or frequency counter, because the shift is a small frequency difference that is awkward to read from a time trace. Ask about any display or logging software, its operating system and licence, and whether raw signals remain available at test points, because the intermediate signals are the lesson.
Two working rules belong in the practical sheet whatever system you buy: nobody looks into an open waveguide, a horn aperture or any antenna feed while the source is energised, and nobody stands directly in front of the aperture at close range while it transmits. Ask the supplier what separation distance they specify for people working near the antenna and the basis of that figure, and whether the source can be switched off independently so alignment and wiring can be done dead.

Specifications, including the frequency, transmitted power and oscilloscope bandwidth assumed, are confirmed in writing on the quotation, with the test conditions behind any figure. For certificates, standards or approvals, contact us for the latest copies of the relevant certificates; spectrum authorisation for use remains the buyer's responsibility. No price is quoted on this page. Listing notes: RT-0001 Radar Training System and RT-0003 Radar Trainer Lab are not described, so it is not stated whether either is pulsed or continuous wave, or whether RT-0003 is a complete bench or a collection of the other items.
