Quick answer. For this six-item range, AW-0001 to AW-0006, the decision that shapes the order is whether you can support the engine for ten years, not which trainer teaches best. Two of the engine trainers use Proton engines and one a Perodua engine, from Malaysian-market vehicles. Fuel injection, ignition and engine management teach the same way on any modern engine, but service data, wiring diagrams, diagnostic software, sensors and consumables for those engines are not easy to obtain in India or most export markets. Ask which are supplied, which we can supply and which you must source locally - before you order.

What this range covers

Six items, coded AW-0001 to AW-0006: an automotive sensor educational system, an automotive air conditioning trainer, three engine trainers and an automatic transmission gearbox on a stand. It is a small range, and the three engine trainers are built around specific production engines, which is the fact that should shape your enquiry.

Two of the engine trainers use Proton engines and one uses a Perodua engine - Malaysian-market vehicles. For teaching principles that matters very little: electronic fuel injection, ignition, sensing and engine management work the same way whatever badge is on the cam cover, and a well-built trainer around any modern engine teaches them properly. For running a workshop for ten years it matters a great deal, because consumables, replacement sensors, service data, wiring diagrams and diagnostic software for those engines are not easy to obtain in India or in most export markets. Settle that before you order, not after.

The Runs, Faults, Data Test

Three questions separate an automotive trainer that a workshop uses every week from one that becomes a display. Ask all three of every item, in this order.

QuestionWhy it decides the purchase
Does it run?A running engine trainer and a static or sectioned display are completely different purchases with completely different requirements. A name like "automotive trainer" does not say which. If it runs, it needs fuel, exhaust extraction, cooling, a battery and somewhere noisy to stand. If it does not, it needs none of those and teaches construction rather than operation. Both are legitimate; confusing them is expensive
Can faults be inserted?Diagnosis is the employable skill, and it cannot be taught on a healthy engine. Ask whether there is a fault-insertion switch box, how many faults it can introduce, whether they are repeatable, and whether an instructor fault key is supplied. A trainer without fault insertion teaches assembly, not diagnosis
Can you get the data and the parts?Service manual, wiring diagrams, specification data and the diagnostic protocol; then filters, belts, plugs, sensors and injectors. Ask which are supplied, which are available from us and which you must source locally for that engine

If the engine runs, the room has to be ready first

A running engine indoors brings requirements that are not negotiable, and they are the reason an engine trainer is sometimes installed and never started.

Exhaust extraction to outside the building. Petrol engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which is colourless, odourless and lethal in an enclosed space, and a classroom with the windows open is not extraction. A connected extraction hose or duct to outside, with the engine never run without it, is the condition of using the equipment at all. Ask what exhaust connection the trainer has and what diameter hose it needs.

Fuel. Ask what the fuel arrangement is - a small tank on the frame or a connection to a separate supply - and what quantity it holds. Petrol storage in an educational building is usually regulated as to quantity, container type and location, so check with your own authority before delivery rather than afterwards. Keep fuel outside the teaching area, keep an extinguisher suitable for fuel fires within reach of the engine, and have a rule about who may refuel and when.

Battery, cooling and noise. A lead-acid starter battery gives off hydrogen on charge, delivers an enormous short-circuit current and should be isolated before anyone works on the wiring - which is also the first thing to teach on it. Ask whether cooling is by radiator and fan on the frame, and what heat the unit puts into the room. And expect an engine on a frame to be far louder than it sounds in a vehicle: a running engine trainer and a lecture in the same room do not coexist.

The air conditioning trainer and the refrigerant question

AW-0002 is the item in this range with a compliance question attached, and it is worth asking carefully. Ask which refrigerant the trainer is charged with and designed for. Automotive air conditioning has moved: the refrigerant used in vehicles for two decades is being phased down under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on timetables that differ by country, and newer vehicles use a replacement refrigerant that is mildly flammable and needs different handling, different recovery equipment and leak detection suited to it. The two are not interchangeable, and equipment for one is not safe to use on the other.

So ask: which refrigerant, is it still importable and purchasable where you are, what recovery and charging equipment is needed, is that equipment rated for the refrigerant in question, and who in your institution is qualified to handle refrigerant. Recovery rather than venting is a legal requirement in most jurisdictions, so a trainer without recovery equipment cannot be serviced lawfully. If your programme teaches both refrigerants, say so and we will quote accordingly. A domestic split-system trainer, which raises the same questions, is listed in the consumer electronics workshop range.

The two items that are not engines

The automotive sensor educational system, AW-0001. This is the most syllabus-proof item in the range, because sensor types and their signals are generic: inductive and Hall effect speed sensors, thermistors, potentiometers, oxygen sensors, pressure sensors and the waveforms they produce are the same across manufacturers. It is also the item that needs an instrument beside it - an oscilloscope, because a sensor waveform is the thing being taught and a multimeter cannot show it. Instruments are listed in the test and measurement workshop range.

The automatic transmission gearbox with stand, AW-0006. Ask whether it is sectioned for display, driveable on the stand, or a strip-and-rebuild unit, because those are three different exercises. Ask for the mass and the stand arrangement, since a transmission is heavy and awkward and a stand that lets it rotate safely is worth more than one that merely holds it. And ask about oil: a driveable unit needs the correct automatic transmission fluid, which is specific to the gearbox, and a strip-down unit needs a drain tray, a parts tray and a cleaning arrangement.

What is not in this range

We would rather tell you what you will have to ask for separately. This listing has no brake, suspension or steering rig, no wheel alignment or balancing equipment, no vehicle lift and no bodywork provision - all of which a full automotive programme needs. More importantly, there is no electric or hybrid vehicle training equipment in it. An automotive syllabus written in the last few years almost certainly includes high-voltage safety, and that is not a subject that can be taught on a petrol engine trainer: it needs its own equipment, insulated tools, specific personal protective equipment and an isolation procedure taught before anything else; the electrical fundamentals, instruments and bench supplies behind that work are listed in the electrical and electronics workshop range. If your programme covers electric vehicles, tell us and we will quote for it rather than letting a general engine trainer stand in for it. Courseware for basic automotive technology is listed in the software workshop range, and automation, sensing and control subjects in the mechatronics workshop range.

One thing to know about this listing, and what to ask for on the quotation

Three of the six product names carry a vehicle manufacturer and engine code, and one of them has the model name trailing after the word trainer, which makes it read oddly. The engine designation is genuinely useful information - it is what tells you which service data to look for - but it is a third-party name in a product title, so treat it as a description of the engine fitted rather than as a brand we represent. Quote the code and the full product name together and ask for the engine specification to be confirmed on the proforma invoice.

Ask for: whether each unit runs or is static; fault insertion arrangement and instructor key; exhaust connection size and extraction requirement; fuel arrangement and capacity; battery type and whether supplied; cooling arrangement; mass, footprint, packed dimensions and whether the frame has castors; service manual, wiring diagrams and diagnostic protocol, and in what language; refrigerant type and the recovery equipment needed; transmission fluid or oil specification; consumables and spares with prices and local availability for that engine; and the warranty, commissioning and local service position. Note that fuel cannot be shipped with the equipment and a battery may be a restricted item in transport, so confirm what arrives dry and what you must buy locally. For any certification stated here, contact us for the latest copies of the relevant certificates before you tender on it.

This page is one of the workshops in the workshop training equipment range. For a quotation, tell us the destination country, whether the engines must run indoors, the class size in one session and the syllabus or tender specification you are working to.

Frequently asked questions

Do the engine trainers run, or are they static displays?

Ask for every item, because a name like automotive trainer does not say. A running engine trainer and a static or sectioned display are completely different purchases. If it runs, it needs fuel, exhaust extraction, cooling, a battery and somewhere noisy to stand, and it teaches operation; if it does not, it needs none of those and teaches construction. Both are legitimate, and confusing them is expensive. Ask too whether faults can be inserted through a switch box with an instructor key, how many, and whether repeatably, because diagnosis is the employable skill and cannot be taught on a healthy engine.

What does a room need before a running engine trainer can be used?

Exhaust extraction to outside the building comes first: petrol exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which is colourless, odourless and lethal in an enclosed space, and open windows are not extraction. Ask the exhaust connection and hose diameter. Ask the fuel arrangement and capacity, and check local rules on petrol storage in an educational building before delivery. Keep an extinguisher suitable for fuel fires within reach, isolate the lead-acid battery before any wiring work, ask how the engine is cooled and what heat it puts into the room, and expect it to be far louder on a frame than in a vehicle.

Which refrigerant does the air conditioning trainer AW-0002 use?

Ask before ordering, because this is the item in the range with a compliance question attached. The refrigerant used in vehicles for two decades is being phased down on timetables that differ by country, and newer vehicles use a replacement that is mildly flammable and needs different handling, recovery equipment and leak detection. The two are not interchangeable, and equipment for one is not safe on the other. Ask which refrigerant, whether it is importable and purchasable where you are, what recovery and charging equipment is needed and rated for it, and who in your institution is qualified to handle refrigerant.

What instrument is needed with the automotive sensor educational system AW-0001?

An oscilloscope. AW-0001 is the most syllabus-proof item in the range, because sensor types and their signals are generic: inductive and Hall effect speed sensors, thermistors, potentiometers, oxygen sensors, pressure sensors and the waveforms they produce are the same across manufacturers. But the sensor waveform is the thing being taught, and a multimeter cannot show it. Oscilloscopes and other instruments are listed in the test and measurement workshop range, so quote them together if your workshop does not already have one for each group.

What should I ask about the automatic transmission gearbox AW-0006?

Whether it is sectioned for display, driveable on the stand, or a strip-and-rebuild unit, because those are three different exercises. Ask the mass and the stand arrangement - a transmission is heavy and awkward, and a stand that lets it rotate safely is worth more than one that merely holds it. Ask about oil too: a driveable unit needs the correct automatic transmission fluid, which is specific to the gearbox, and a strip-down unit needs a drain tray, a parts tray and a cleaning arrangement. Ask for the fluid specification to be confirmed in writing on the quotation.

Does this range cover electric vehicles or a full automotive programme?

No. There is no brake, suspension or steering rig, no wheel alignment or balancing equipment, no vehicle lift and no bodywork provision, and no electric or hybrid vehicle training equipment. A recent automotive syllabus almost certainly includes high-voltage safety, which cannot be taught on a petrol engine trainer: it needs its own equipment, insulated tools, specific personal protective equipment and an isolation procedure taught before anything else. If your programme covers electric vehicles, tell us and we will quote for it rather than letting a general engine trainer stand in for it.

Key takeaways

  • Check engine support before teaching value - service data, diagnostic software and parts for Malaysian-market engines are hard to source in India and most export markets.
  • Runs, faults, data - ask all three of every item: does it run, can faults be inserted, can you get the data and parts.
  • Extraction to outside is the condition of running an engine indoors - carbon monoxide is lethal in an enclosed room.
  • Confirm the refrigerant on AW-0002 and recovery equipment rated for it; venting rather than recovery is unlawful in most jurisdictions.
  • Budget an oscilloscope with AW-0001 - sensor waveforms cannot be seen on a multimeter.
  • Fuel cannot be shipped and a battery may be restricted - confirm what arrives dry and what you must buy locally.
