Quick answer. Approve this list against your syllabus and each unit's fault-insertion facility, not against the specification. A servicing trainer is worth almost exactly what its fault insertion is worth: a working television on a frame teaches a student to watch television, and the learning happens when a fault is present, a symptom is observed and a measurement settles it. So ask, for every code from TCEW-0001 to TCEW-0014, how many faults can be introduced and how, whether an instructor fault key exists, and whether a student can be examined on it. Then check each subject is still examined, because some products here are no longer commercially live.
These fourteen units, coded TCEW-0001 to TCEW-0014, equip a consumer electronics servicing workshop: the trade of finding and repairing faults in finished domestic products rather than studying electronics theory. The range covers television in both tube and flat-panel form, radio and audio, a power amplifier, DVD and CD players, a mobile phone trainer, CCTV and video-door security, a public address system, a PABX exchange, a fire alarm system and a split air conditioner. The subjects are chosen so that a student meets a mains-powered chassis, a low-voltage signal chain, a wired installation and a sealed consumer product in the same workshop.
The question that decides whether this range is right for you is not the specification; it is your syllabus. Several of these subjects are still examined in national trade curricula and several are no longer commercially live. Read the two sections below before approving a list, because the difference between a trainer that teaches a transferable skill and one that teaches a dead product is not visible on a quotation.
| Code | Unit | What a student practises on it |
|---|---|---|
| TCEW-0001 | Mobile phone trainer | Block-level diagnosis, charging and power paths, display and connector faults |
| TCEW-0002, TCEW-0006 | CCTV security system kits, one with a video door phone | Camera and monitor installation, cabling, power distribution, recording |
| TCEW-0003 | Public address system unit | Microphone and line inputs, mixing, impedance matching, speaker lines |
| TCEW-0004 | PABX trainer | Extension wiring, trunk lines, numbering and call routing |
| TCEW-0005 | Fire alarm system kit | Zones and loops, detectors, sounders, panel indications and fault conditions |
| TCEW-0007 | DVD and CD player training system | Optical pickup, servo and tracking, decoding, power supply faults |
| TCEW-0008, TCEW-0010 | Colour television trainers, tube and LCD | Signal chain from tuner to display, power supply, backlight or EHT faults |
| TCEW-0009, TCEW-0011 | HI-FI and AM-FM radio training systems | RF front end, mixing and detection, audio stages, alignment |
| TCEW-0012 | Power amplifier training system | Gain stages, output devices, distortion, protection and thermal behaviour |
| TCEW-0013 | Fax machine trainer | Scanning, printing mechanism and line interface of a legacy office product |
| TCEW-0014 | Split air conditioner trainer | Refrigeration cycle, electrical control, compressor and fan faults |
A servicing trainer is worth almost exactly what its fault-insertion facility is worth. A working television on a frame teaches a student to watch television. The teaching happens when a fault is present, the symptom is observed, a hypothesis is formed and a measurement settles it. So before comparing prices, put every unit on this page through four questions.
| Question | Why it decides the purchase |
|---|---|
| How many faults can be introduced, and how? | A switch bank behind a locked panel is repeatable and safe; pulling components is realistic but destroys the trainer over a few years. Ask which, and how many switched faults there are |
| Is there a fault key for the instructor? | Without a documented list of faults and expected symptoms, the instructor cannot set work or mark it consistently |
| Can a student be examined on it? | A trainer that cannot be set to an unknown state cannot be used for assessment, which is half of what a trade workshop needs |
| What are the test points, and what instrument is needed at each? | Decides what else you must buy; several units here need an oscilloscope rather than a multimeter |
Test and measurement equipment is listed separately in the test and measurement workshop range. Buy it in the same order, because a servicing workshop with trainers and no instruments cannot run a single practical.
Three things belong on every bench in this workshop before a trainer is placed on it.
An isolating transformer. Some mains-powered consumer chassis are not isolated from the supply, and on such a set the chassis itself can sit at mains potential. Working on a non-isolated chassis with earthed test equipment is how both the student and the oscilloscope get damaged. An isolating transformer at each bench removes that path, and a variable transformer is useful alongside it for low-voltage start-up testing; these are listed under variable transformers.
Soldering with extraction, and the right iron for the job. Through-hole work on a television chassis and rework on a phone board are different trades: the second needs a temperature-controlled iron, hot air and a fume extractor, and in practice a microscope. Soldering and desoldering stations are listed separately. Rosin-cored solder fume is a respiratory sensitiser, which is why extraction is not optional.
Earth-leakage protection and a visible emergency stop. Everything on this page except the trainers themselves runs from the mains, and students are deliberately being asked to probe live equipment under supervision.
The tube television, TCEW-0008. A cathode ray tube set contains an extra-high-tension supply at tens of kilovolts, and the tube behaves as a capacitor that can hold a dangerous charge after the set is switched off and unplugged. Nobody should work inside one until they have been taught the discharge procedure and have seen it done. The tube is also an implosion risk and must never be handled without eye protection, and at end of life it is leaded glass and a controlled waste in most countries. None of this is a reason to avoid a CRT trainer - it remains one of the best platforms there is for teaching high-voltage discipline and an analog signal chain - but it is a reason to confirm that your instructor is competent to teach on it and that a discharge tool is supplied with the unit.
The mobile phone trainer, TCEW-0001. Be clear about what it is. Board-level phone repair as practised commercially needs microsoldering under a microscope, hot air, a stable supply with current display, and a supply of parts; a mobile phone trainer is a teaching platform for the architecture and the common faults, not a substitute for that bench. Ask what is included, what is demonstrated and whether the unit uses a current handset architecture. And set the battery rule in writing before students touch it: a lithium cell that is punctured, crushed or shorted vents and burns, and it cannot be put out by smothering it the way a small electrical fire can. Practice batteries should be removed from sets where the exercise does not need them.
The split air conditioner trainer, TCEW-0014. This unit is really a refrigeration trainer and sits in this listing only because it is a domestic appliance. It brings three requirements with it. First, ask which refrigerant it is charged with before ordering: ozone-depleting refrigerants are being withdrawn under the Montreal Protocol and high global-warming refrigerants are being phased down under its Kigali Amendment, on timetables that differ by country, and a trainer charged with a refrigerant you cannot buy locally will be hard to recharge for its whole life. Second, ask whether your institution has anyone qualified to handle refrigerant, and whether a recovery machine, vacuum pump and gauge set are included or extra. Third, if the exercises involve brazing, that is hot work needing its own area, ventilation and a nitrogen purge rather than compressed air. Related electrical trainers are listed in the electrical and electronics workshop range.
We would rather say this plainly than sell a unit that will sit unused. Judge each subject against the syllabus you are funded to deliver, not against what looks modern.
| Unit | Honest position in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Fire alarm, PA, CCTV, PABX | Commercially live trades. Installation and maintenance work exists now, and these four are the most employable subjects on the page |
| LCD television, power amplifier, mobile phone | Current products. Flat-panel power supplies and backlights are the commonest television repair in the field today |
| AM-FM radio, HI-FI, CRT television, DVD and CD | Still examined in many trade curricula and excellent for teaching fundamentals, but the products themselves are legacy. Buy them because the syllabus requires them or because they teach a principle well, not as preparation for a repair market |
| Fax machine | Obsolete as a consumer product. Worth buying only if an examination specification still names it |
Two further points on the CCTV and PABX units, because the technology moved underneath both. Ask whether the CCTV kit is analog or network based: a programme that teaches IP cameras, power over Ethernet and a network video recorder needs network equipment, which is listed under the information technology workshop range. Ask the same of the PABX: an analog exchange teaches extension wiring and call routing well but teaches nothing about voice over IP. For transmission and signalling subjects proper, see the communications workshop range, and for electronics fundamentals at board level, basic electronics trainers.
Broadcast standard, not just voltage. A television or radio trainer is built for a region. Analog colour standards differ, and so do digital terrestrial standards, so a set configured for one region cannot demonstrate reception in another even though it will switch on. Tell us the destination country and whether the exercises need live off-air reception or a pattern generator, because a pattern generator removes the problem entirely and is often the better answer for a classroom.
Also confirm on the quotation: nominal voltage, frequency and plug pattern for every unit; refrigerant type for TCEW-0014 and whether recovery equipment is included; whether lithium cells ship with the phone trainer, since they are a dangerous good and need their transport test documentation; the fault-insertion arrangement and instructor fault key for each trainer; consumable and spare prices, which on this range means lamps, fuses, belts, optical pickups and solder; and the warranty and commissioning terms. For any certification stated for an item here, contact us for the latest copies of the relevant certificates before you tender on it.
This page is one of the workshops in the workshop training equipment range; the nearest alternative range of bench trainers for the same subjects is consumer electronics trainers. For a quotation, tell us the destination country, the supply at the bench, how many students work in one session and the syllabus or tender specification you are working to.
Four questions for every unit. How many faults can be introduced, and how: a switch bank behind a locked panel is repeatable and safe, while pulling components is realistic but wears the trainer out over a few years. Is there an instructor fault key listing the faults and expected symptoms, so work can be set and marked consistently? Can a student be examined on it, by setting it to an unknown state? And what are the test points and the instrument needed at each - several units here need an oscilloscope rather than a multimeter, so order test equipment at the same time.
Judge each against the syllabus you are funded to deliver. Fire alarm, public address, CCTV and PABX are commercially live installation and maintenance trades and the most employable subjects here. The LCD television, power amplifier and mobile phone trainer cover current products. AM-FM radio, HI-FI, the CRT television and the DVD and CD player are legacy products, still examined in many trade curricula and good for fundamentals. The fax machine trainer is worth buying only if an examination still names it. Ask too whether the CCTV kit is analog or network based, and note an analog PABX teaches nothing about voice over IP.
Three things before any trainer is placed on it. An isolating transformer, because some mains-powered consumer chassis are not isolated from the supply and can sit at mains potential; probing one with earthed test equipment damages both student and oscilloscope. Soldering with fume extraction and the right iron: through-hole television work and phone board rework are different trades, the second needing a temperature-controlled iron, hot air and in practice a microscope, and rosin-cored solder fume is a respiratory sensitiser. And earth-leakage protection with a visible emergency stop, since students probe live equipment under supervision.
It can be taught safely, with preparation. A cathode ray tube set has an extra-high-tension supply at tens of kilovolts, and the tube behaves as a capacitor that can hold a dangerous charge after the set is switched off and unplugged. Nobody should work inside one until they have been taught the discharge procedure and seen it done. The tube is also an implosion risk, so eye protection is mandatory, and at end of life it is leaded glass and controlled waste in most countries. Confirm your instructor is competent to teach on it and that a discharge tool is supplied.
Treat it as a refrigeration trainer, because that is what it is. First, ask which refrigerant it is charged with: ozone-depleting refrigerants are being withdrawn and high global-warming refrigerants phased down on timetables that differ by country, and a trainer charged with a refrigerant you cannot buy locally will be hard to recharge for its whole life. Second, check your institution has someone qualified to handle refrigerant, and whether a recovery machine, vacuum pump and gauge set are included or extra. Third, any brazing is hot work needing its own area, ventilation and a nitrogen purge rather than compressed air.
It will switch on, but it may not receive. Television and radio trainers are built for a region: analog colour standards differ, and so do digital terrestrial standards, so a set configured for one region cannot demonstrate reception in another. Tell us the destination country and whether the exercises need live off-air reception or a pattern generator; a pattern generator removes the problem entirely and is often the better classroom answer. Confirm the nominal voltage, frequency and plug pattern for every unit on the quotation, and whether lithium cells ship with the phone trainer, since they need transport test documentation.

Specifications for each trainer - fault-insertion arrangement and number of faults, instructor fault key, test points, broadcast standard, refrigerant type and recovery equipment, battery arrangement and supply voltage - are confirmed in writing on the quotation. For transport, safety or other certificates, standards or approvals, contact us for the latest copies of the relevant certificates. No price is quoted on this page. Listing note: the split air conditioner TCEW-0014 is a refrigeration trainer filed here because it is a domestic appliance; the fax machine trainer TCEW-0013 covers an obsolete product; and the same subjects also appear as bench trainers in the consumer electronics trainers range, so compare both before ordering.
