Mantles & Soxhlet Apparatus

Mantles & Soxhlet Apparatus Lab Equipment Manufacturer, Supplier and Exporter in India

Ray Export is a leading manufacturer and supplier of Mantles & Soxhlet Apparatus in India,

Quick answer. Choose the heat source by the solvent, not by habit. Every Soxhlet and fat extraction run in MSA-0001 to MSA-0007 boils a volatile flammable solvent for hours, often unattended, and an exposed hot plate surface can ignite that vapour where an enclosed heating mantle does not. For petroleum spirit, hexane, ether or anything similar, specify a mantle (MSA-0001, MSA-0004) or a unit built around one (MSA-0002). For the two hot plate types, MSA-0005 and MSA-0006, ask what liquid each is intended for before ordering. Then plan the run around one failure: the condenser cooling water stopping.

Seven items are listed here, MSA-0001 to MSA-0007: heating mantles, Soxhlet extraction heating units and fat extraction apparatus, a crude fibre estimation apparatus and an immersion heater. The chemistry these serve is solvent extraction, which means a volatile flammable solvent boiled continuously for hours, and that makes this range the highest fire risk in most teaching and food-testing laboratories. One consequence is worth stating before the specifications: a hot plate is the wrong heat source for a volatile solvent, and one code in this listing is a hot plate type. That section is below.

What is in the range

CodeItemWhat it is for
MSA-0001Heating mantleGeneral flask heating
MSA-0004Soxhlet heating mantleMantle sized and arranged for extraction
MSA-0002Soxhlet extraction apparatus with heating unitExtraction, complete with its heater
MSA-0003Soxhlet fat extraction apparatusFat determination in food and feed
MSA-0005Soxhlet extraction heater, hot plate typeExtraction, heated by hot plate; see the warning below
MSA-0006Crude fibre estimation apparatus, hot plate typeFibre determination by hot acid and alkali reflux
MSA-0007Immersion heaterDirect heating of a liquid

Mantle or hot plate: this is a safety decision, not a preference

A heating mantle encloses its element in the fabric that cradles the flask, so there is no exposed hot surface and no glowing element for solvent vapour to reach. An open hot plate has an exposed heated surface, and a heated surface can ignite the vapour of a volatile solvent. Solvent extraction produces exactly that vapour, continuously, for the whole run, and any leak at a joint or a failure of the condenser puts it over the heater.

So, for extraction with petroleum spirit, hexane, ether or any similar solvent, specify a mantle (MSA-0001, MSA-0004) or a complete unit built around one (MSA-0002). If you are considering MSA-0005 or MSA-0006, ask the supplier directly what solvent the hot plate version is intended for and what the surface temperature is, and ask whether a mantle version of the same apparatus can be supplied instead. There are legitimate uses for a hot plate type, principally where the heated liquid is aqueous, which is the case for much of the crude fibre method, but the question has to be asked rather than assumed.

The things that make an extraction run safe

A Soxhlet runs for hours and is normally left running, which is the opposite of most laboratory operations, so the protections have to be built in rather than supervised:

  • Cooling water failure is the main scenario to design against. If the condenser water stops, solvent vapour stops condensing and goes into the room, over a hot heater. Ask whether a water flow switch that cuts the heater is available, or fit a recirculating chiller so the supply does not depend on the building. At a minimum, ask what the cooling water flow rate must be and fit a visible flow indicator.
  • Over-temperature protection on the heater, independent of the main controller, and whether it resets itself or latches. Ask what happens if the control thermostat fails closed.
  • Extraction or a fume cupboard. Ask what the supplier assumes, and remember that extraction fast enough to clear solvent vapour is not the same as general room ventilation.
  • No ignition sources on the bench or near the floor, since solvent vapours are heavier than air and collect low down. That includes ordinary switches and sockets at bench level.
  • The right extinguisher within reach, carbon dioxide or dry powder rather than water, and a solvent spill plan with absorbent to hand.
  • A solvent store, sized for how much you will hold, outside the laboratory where possible, and a rule that bulk containers are not kept on the bench.

One solvent-specific point: diethyl ether forms peroxides on storage and the peroxides concentrate in the residue when the solvent is evaporated, so ether is bought in small quantities, dated on receipt, kept away from light and discarded by the date rather than kept until it is used up. If your method allows petroleum spirit or hexane instead, that is the easier solvent to hold safely.

Heating mantles: what to ask

A mantle is sized to a flask, not to a wattage, and a flask that does not match its mantle is the usual cause of cracked glass and burnt mantles. Ask:

  • the flask capacity each mantle is made for, and whether a single mantle covers a range or one size only, because a flask that sits proud of its mantle has a hot ring round it and a flask too small for its mantle leaves the element exposed;
  • the wattage and whether a controller is integral or a separate energy regulator, and if separate, whether it is included;
  • whether the mantle has a stirrer, since much extraction and reflux work wants one, and whether the mantle is rated for continuous operation, because these units run all day;
  • the housing material and whether the mantle can be cleaned after a spill, because a solvent spill into a mantle is both a fire risk and the end of that mantle;
  • whether replacement mantles for the same housing are available and at what price, since the fabric element is the wearing part.

Two rules for the laboratory wall: a mantle is never switched on empty, which destroys the element, and an immersion heater (MSA-0007) is never switched on out of liquid, which destroys it in seconds and is a fire risk. For the immersion heater, ask the wattage, the sheath material and whether it is suitable for the liquid you intend, since many sheaths are not suitable for acids.

Extraction and fibre apparatus: the specification

Ask, against each code: the number of places, which sets throughput, and whether places can be run independently; the flask and extraction thimble sizes, and whether thimbles are supplied and at what price, since they are the consumable; the condenser type and the cooling water consumption per place; whether solvent recovery is provided, which matters for cost and for how much solvent you handle; and whether the quoted item is the complete glass train or only the heater. On MSA-0003, ask which standard method it is built for, since fat determination methods differ in solvent, time and sample preparation, and the apparatus has to match the method your results will be reported against.

For the crude fibre apparatus (MSA-0006), ask what the digestion vessels are made of and whether they resist the hot acid and alkali the method uses; whether a filtration arrangement and crucibles are included; and what fume handling the acid reflux stage needs, since this method produces its own fume even though the solvent risk is lower.

Also worth confirming

Ask whether MSA-0001 and MSA-0004 differ in anything but the name, since one is a heating mantle and the other a Soxhlet heating mantle with nothing stated to separate them, and the same of MSA-0002 against MSA-0003. Ask for the method sheet and the glassware list with the quotation, replacement glassware and thimble prices, the installation requirements as a document, the supply voltage, frequency and plug type for your country, and the warranty. Any figure quoted is confirmed in writing on the quotation; ask for its basis.

Weighing, which every gravimetric determination here depends on, is under Lab Balances and Scales.

Request a quote

State the method you are working to and the solvent it uses, and ask for a mantle-heated unit unless the supplier can justify otherwise. For example a six-place Soxhlet extraction unit with heating mantles (MSA-0002), with the thimble size and price, the cooling water demand per place, the over-temperature protection and the availability of a water flow switch confirmed in writing. Frequently asked questions

Is a hot plate type Soxhlet heater safe to use with hexane or petroleum spirit?

An open hot plate has an exposed heated surface, and a heated surface can ignite the vapour of a volatile solvent. Extraction produces that vapour continuously for the whole run, and a leak at a joint or a condenser failure puts it straight over the heater. For volatile solvents, specify a heating mantle (MSA-0001, MSA-0004) or the mantle-heated unit MSA-0002. If you are looking at MSA-0005, ask what solvent the hot plate version is intended for and what its surface temperature is, and whether a mantle version of the same apparatus can be supplied instead.

Why is the crude fibre apparatus a hot plate type, and what else does it need?

The crude fibre method (MSA-0006) works by hot acid and alkali reflux, and much of that liquid is aqueous, which is the legitimate case for a hot plate. It still needs checking rather than assuming. Ask what the digestion vessels are made of and whether they resist the hot acid and alkali the method uses, whether a filtration arrangement and crucibles are included, and what fume handling the acid reflux stage needs. The solvent fire risk is lower here, but the method produces its own fume, so do not plan it for an open bench without asking.

What happens if the condenser cooling water fails during an extraction?

This is the main scenario to design against. If the condenser water stops, solvent vapour stops condensing and goes into the room, over a hot heater, during a run that is normally left unattended. Ask whether a water flow switch that cuts the heater is available, or fit a recirculating chiller so the supply does not depend on the building. At a minimum, ask the required cooling water flow rate and fit a visible flow indicator. Also ask for over-temperature protection independent of the main controller, whether it latches or resets itself, and what happens if the control thermostat fails closed.

How do I choose the right heating mantle?

Size it to the flask, not to a wattage. A flask that sits proud of its mantle has a hot ring round it, and a flask too small for its mantle leaves the element exposed; mismatches are the usual cause of cracked glass and burnt mantles. For MSA-0001 and MSA-0004, ask the flask capacity each is made for and whether one mantle covers a range, the wattage, whether the controller is integral or a separate energy regulator, whether a stirrer is fitted, whether it is rated for all-day running, and whether the housing can be cleaned after a solvent spill. Never switch a mantle on empty.

What should I specify for the Soxhlet and fat extraction units?

Start with the method. On MSA-0003, ask which standard fat determination method it is built for, because methods differ in solvent, time and sample preparation, and the apparatus has to match the method your results will be reported against. Then ask, for MSA-0002 and MSA-0003: the number of places and whether they run independently, the flask and extraction thimble sizes, whether thimbles are supplied, the condenser type and cooling water use per place, whether solvent recovery is provided, and whether the quotation covers the complete glass train or only the heater.

What room precautions should be in place before running solvent extractions?

Ask what extraction or fume cupboard the supplier assumes; extraction fast enough to clear solvent vapour is not the same as general room ventilation. Keep ignition sources off the bench and away from the floor, including bench-level switches and sockets, because solvent vapours are heavier than air and collect low down. Keep a carbon dioxide or dry powder extinguisher within reach, not water, with a spill plan and absorbent. Store bulk solvent outside the laboratory where possible. Diethyl ether forms peroxides on storage, so buy it in small quantities, date it on receipt and discard it by that date.

Key takeaways

  • Mantle for volatile solvents: specify MSA-0001, MSA-0004 or the mantle-heated unit MSA-0002 for extraction with flammable solvents.
  • Question the hot plate types: for MSA-0005 and MSA-0006, ask the intended liquid, the surface temperature and whether a mantle version exists.
  • Design for water failure: a flow switch that cuts the heater, or a recirculating chiller, protects a run left unattended.
  • Match flask to mantle: a mantle is sized to a flask, is never switched on empty and must be rated for continuous running.
  • Immersion heater only in liquid: MSA-0007 is destroyed in seconds if switched on dry, and its sheath must suit your liquid, since many do not suit acids.
  • Method before apparatus: state the fat or fibre method and its solvent so the unit matches the method your results are reported against.
