Quick answer. This listing, CE-0001 onwards, serves four laboratories - surveying, concrete and cement, soil mechanics and highway materials - and the decision that matters is buying in the order the tests run: classify, then test. A strength result on a soil that has not been classified cannot be interpreted, so the sieves and sieve shaker, liquid limit apparatus and moisture and density apparatus come before the direct shear, triaxial, consolidation and CBR machines. They are also the cheapest and most used items. Buy the slow, expensive strength tests against your syllabus and expected sample throughput rather than for completeness.
About thirty items, coded CE-0001 onwards, and they belong to four separate laboratories that a civil engineering department runs. Surveying: digital level, auto level, digital and laser theodolites and total stations. Concrete and cement: precision cube moulds, a concrete vibrator, a concrete mixer, a cement mortar mixer, a Vicat apparatus and a concrete penetration test apparatus. Soil mechanics: liquid limit apparatus, soil sieves and a sieve shaker, moisture and density apparatus, consolidation equipment, direct shear, unconfined compression and triaxial compression machines, and a digital CBR test machine. Highway and aggregate materials: a Los Angeles abrasion machine, a Marshall stability testing machine and a Cleveland flash point tester for bitumen. A brick cutter, a tensile strength tester, a digital impact test machine and a Rockwell hardness tester complete the listing.
Three notes on our catalogue data. The first record in this listing is a marketing phrase rather than a product, and we are removing it. One total station record is a duplicate of another, distinguished only by the words "type-2". And the Marshall stability machine has the name of the test misspelled - it is the Marshall method, which is the term you are probably searching for. The Rockwell hardness tester and the impact machine are metals instruments rather than civil ones and also appear in our universal testing machines listing; they are perfectly usable here, but if metals testing is your subject, ask for that listing. Quote the code and the full product name together and have both confirmed on the proforma invoice.
This is the sequence that governs a soils and materials laboratory, and the order in which the equipment should be bought.
A strength result on a soil that has not been classified cannot be interpreted. Shear strength, consolidation behaviour and CBR all depend on what the material is and on how much water it holds, so the classification tests - grading by sieve, liquid and plastic limits, moisture content and density - come first both in the method and in the purchase order. They are also the cheapest equipment in the listing and the most used.
| Stage | Equipment here | Why it comes first |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Identify and classify | Soil sieves and sieve shaker, liquid limit apparatus, moisture and density apparatus | Every later result is reported against the classification. A laboratory that owns a triaxial machine and no sieves has the sequence backwards |
| 2. Compact and condition | Moisture and density apparatus, and the compaction and curing provisions discussed below | Strength depends on density and moisture content, so a specimen prepared differently is a different material |
| 3. Measure strength and deformation | Direct shear, unconfined compression, triaxial, consolidation, CBR | These are the expensive, slow tests. Buy them against the syllabus and the expected sample throughput rather than for completeness |
The triaxial machine is what separates a serious soil mechanics laboratory from a teaching one, and it is routinely under-specified because buyers price the load frame and not the system. A working triaxial test needs: the cell itself, in the specimen size your standard names; a load frame with a controllable rate of strain; a cell pressure system and a back pressure system, each regulated and measurable; pore pressure measurement; volume change measurement; and a supply of de-aired water.
Two things follow from that, and they should shape the purchase. Saturation matters as much as loading - trapped air in a specimen makes a pore pressure measurement meaningless, which is why de-aired water and a saturation stage are part of the method rather than refinements. And these tests are slow: a consolidated drained test on a clay runs for days, not hours, so a single cell is a bottleneck in both teaching and consultancy. Ask how many cells the pressure system can serve, whether the frame is multi-speed, and whether data logging is available - a test that runs for three days cannot be read by hand.
For the consolidation equipment ask the same kind of question: how many oedometer units, what loading arrangement - lever arm with weights or a self-contained loader - and how settlement is measured and recorded over the days the test takes.
Cube moulds are precision items, not boxes. The dimensional tolerance and the flatness of the faces are specified by the standard, because a specimen that is not a true cube with plane parallel faces fails early and reports a strength lower than the concrete actually has. Ask for the tolerance the moulds are made to, whether they are machined steel or cast iron, whether a certificate is supplied, and how they are to be checked in service - moulds wear and distort, and an old mould quietly lowers every result taken from it.
And the provision most often missing from a quotation: curing. Standard compressive strength is measured on specimens cured in water at a controlled temperature for a specified age. Without a curing tank with temperature control, a twenty-eight day result is not a standard result and cannot be compared with a specification or with anyone else. There is no curing tank in this listing - ask us to quote one with the moulds, along with the compression testing machine, which is listed in our universal testing machines range and should be specified with a rate of loading that matches your standard.
Two practical points on the mixing equipment. A concrete mixer and a cement mortar mixer are different machines to different standards - the mortar mixer is a specified laboratory mixer for standard mortar, not a small concrete mixer. And cement is more hazardous than it looks: wet cement is strongly alkaline and causes burns on prolonged skin contact, and dry cement dust is a respiratory irritant, so gloves, eye protection and dust control belong with this equipment and should be in the laboratory rules from the first session.
The Los Angeles abrasion machine gives the aggregate abrasion value and is the noisiest machine in this listing by a wide margin - a steel drum with a charge of steel spheres, rotating for hundreds of revolutions. Ask for the noise level, plan where it stands accordingly, and ask what the steel charge consists of and whether spares are available, since the spheres wear and the method specifies them.
The Marshall stability machine tests compacted bituminous mixes, and the test is temperature-sensitive: specimens are brought to a specified temperature in a water bath before testing, and a Marshall result taken at the wrong temperature is not comparable with anything. Ask whether the water bath, the compaction hammer and the moulds are included, because the machine alone cannot run the method. The Cleveland flash point tester alongside it is the correct instrument for the flash point of bitumen - the same instrument family appears in our oil and petroleum testing listing, where the flash point safety and method questions are set out in full.
A total station is a system too. Ask what comes with it: tripod, prisms and prism poles, a battery and charger with spare batteries, a data format and the software to download it, and a carrying case. Ask about the angular and distance accuracy, the reflectorless range if that matters to you, and what the collimation and vertical index checks are and how often they should be done - a total station that has not been checked is an instrument with an unknown constant error, and teaching the check is itself part of the syllabus.
For the levels and theodolites, the same logic applies at a lower price: staves, tripods, a two-peg test procedure for the level and a face-left-face-right routine for the theodolite. For a teaching department, buying several simple instruments usually teaches more than buying one expensive one, because surveying is learned by doing it in groups and a single total station leaves a class watching.
The standard each item is built to; for soils, specimen sizes and whether cells, oedometers and rings suit your standard; pressure systems, de-aired water provision, pore pressure and volume change measurement, and the number of cells served; loading rates and whether they are adjustable; data logging options and software licence terms; for concrete, mould tolerance and certificate, and whether a curing tank is included or extra; for Marshall, whether bath, hammer and moulds are included; for surveying, accessories, accuracies, battery life, data format and software, and the field check procedures; calibration certificates, traceability and recalibration intervals; services at the position, including water and drainage; noise, mass, footprint and floor loading; consumables and spares with prices - sieves, filter papers, rubber membranes, porous stones, steel charge, moulds; and the warranty, commissioning and local service position. For any certification stated here, contact us for the latest copies of the relevant certificates before you tender on it.
Related ranges: universal testing machines for compression, flexure and the hardness and impact machines, machines for structures and strength of materials apparatus including trusses and beams, hydraulics and fluid mechanics trainers for the water side of civil engineering, and oil and petroleum testing for bitumen testing. The full set is listed under engineering apparatus. For a quotation, tell us the destination country, the standards you work to, whether the laboratory is for teaching or for commercial testing, and your expected sample throughput - a teaching laboratory and a consultancy laboratory need different equipment from this page.
The classification equipment: soil sieves and the sieve shaker, the liquid limit apparatus, and the moisture and density apparatus. Shear strength, consolidation behaviour and CBR all depend on what the material is and how much water it holds, so every later result is reported against the classification - a laboratory that owns a triaxial machine and no sieves has the sequence backwards. Next comes compaction and conditioning, because a specimen prepared differently is a different material. The strength machines - direct shear, unconfined compression, triaxial, consolidation and the digital CBR machine - come last, bought against syllabus and throughput.
More than the load frame, which is why triaxial testing is routinely under-specified. A working test needs the cell in the specimen size your standard names, a load frame with a controllable rate of strain, regulated and measurable cell pressure and back pressure systems, pore pressure measurement, volume change measurement and a supply of de-aired water. Saturation matters as much as loading, because trapped air makes a pore pressure reading meaningless. These tests are also slow - a consolidated drained test on a clay runs for days - so ask how many cells the pressure system serves and whether data logging is available.
Often because of the mould or the curing. Cube moulds are precision items: the dimensional tolerance and face flatness are specified, and a specimen that is not a true cube with plane parallel faces fails early and reports lower strength than the concrete has. Ask the tolerance, whether the moulds are machined steel or cast iron, whether a certificate is supplied and how to check them in service, since moulds wear and distort. Standard strength also needs water curing at a controlled temperature for a specified age. There is no curing tank in this listing, so ask for one with the moulds, plus a compression testing machine.
Cement is more hazardous than it looks: wet cement is strongly alkaline and causes burns on prolonged skin contact, and dry cement dust is a respiratory irritant. Gloves, eye protection and dust control belong with this equipment and in the laboratory rules from the first session. Note also that the concrete mixer and the cement mortar mixer are different machines to different standards - the mortar mixer is a specified laboratory mixer for standard mortar, not a small concrete mixer - so buy the one your test method names, or both if you run both tests.
The Los Angeles abrasion machine is the noisiest machine in this listing by a wide margin - a steel drum with a charge of steel spheres rotating for hundreds of revolutions - so ask its noise level and plan where it stands, and ask what the steel charge consists of and whether spares are available, since the spheres wear. The Marshall stability machine cannot run the method alone: ask whether the water bath, compaction hammer and moulds are included, because a result taken at the wrong temperature is not comparable. The Cleveland tester is the correct instrument for the flash point of bitumen.
Usually not. Surveying is learned by doing it in groups, and a single total station leaves a class watching, so several levels and theodolites often teach more than one expensive instrument. Whichever you buy, ask what comes with it - tripod, prisms and poles, batteries and charger, data format, software and case - the angular and distance accuracy, and the field checks: collimation and vertical index for a total station, the two-peg test for a level, face-left-face-right for a theodolite. An unchecked instrument carries an unknown constant error, and teaching the check is part of the syllabus.
