Lab Balances & Scales

Lab Balances & Scales Lab Equipment Manufacturer, Supplier and Exporter in India

Ray Export is a leading manufacturer and supplier of Lab Balances & Scales in India,

Quick answer. Buy a balance on repeatability, not on its decimal places. The LBS codes span analytical and precision balances, moisture balances, spring, suspension and platform scales, and personal and baby scales, and the product names state none of the figures that decide whether a weighing is good. For each laboratory balance, get readability, repeatability, linearity and corner-load error in writing, choose a capacity just above your heaviest sample plus its container, and decide where it will stand, because an analytical balance only meets its specification on a rigid, draught-free bench. If anything weighed is sold or officially reported, settle trade verification too.

Around sixty weighing instruments are listed here, coded LBS-0001 upward across six pages, and they cover four separate markets: analytical and precision laboratory balances, moisture balances, personal and baby scales, and spring, suspension and platform scales. Two things to know before comparing them. The figure on the display is readability, not accuracy, and the specifications that decide whether a weighing is any good are not in the product names. And an analytical balance is only as good as the bench it stands on, which is a room decision rather than a purchasing one. Both are below.

Readability is not accuracy: the four figures to ask for

A balance that displays four decimal places is not necessarily accurate to four decimal places. For every laboratory balance you are quoting, ask for all four of these and get them in writing:

  • Readability, the smallest increment the display shows. This is the figure catalogues quote and the least informative of the four.
  • Repeatability, given as a standard deviation. This is what tells you whether weighing the same object ten times gives the same answer, and it is the figure that limits a real measurement.
  • Linearity, the worst-case deviation across the whole range, which matters whenever you weigh at both ends of the capacity.
  • Corner-load or off-centre error, the change in reading when the load sits away from the centre of the pan. On a top-loading balance this is often the largest error in practice and it is almost never quoted.

Then choose the capacity deliberately. Buying more capacity than you need costs resolution, because a balance is a compromise between the two, so pick a capacity a little above the heaviest sample plus its container rather than the largest you can afford. Ask the pan size as well, since a sample that overhangs the pan cannot be weighed properly whatever the specification says.

Calibration, and whether the balance is legal for trade

Two separate questions, often confused:

Calibration. Ask whether the balance has internal motorised calibration, which LBS-0001 appears to offer, or needs external weights. If external, ask which class of weight is required and whether one is supplied, because the weight is a real cost and the wrong class makes the calibration meaningless. Ask whether a traceable calibration certificate comes with the instrument, what the recommended recalibration interval is, who performs it in your country and at what cost. An analytical balance without a calibration history cannot support a reported result.

Legal for trade. If the balance will be used to weigh anything that is sold, or to produce a result that is reported for a legal or official purpose, it generally has to be a verified and stamped instrument under your national weights and measures law, which is a different approval from accuracy. Most laboratory balances are not verified for trade use. Ask explicitly whether the model you want is approved and whether it is supplied stamped, and settle that before ordering rather than after an inspection.

The bench matters more than the balance

An analytical or semi-micro balance will not reach its specification on the wrong bench, and no amount of money spent on the instrument compensates. Before ordering one, decide where it will live:

  • A heavy, rigid bench, ideally a stone or anti-vibration table, standing on a solid floor and not on a suspended wooden one. A semi-micro balance on a light bench near a doorway is unusable.
  • Away from draughts: not under an air-conditioning outlet, not beside a door or a window, and not next to a fume cupboard. Use the draught shield every time, which on a four-decimal balance is not optional.
  • A stable temperature, out of direct sun, and left powered so it stays at working temperature; ask the warm-up time from cold.
  • Static, which matters once you are weighing powders or using plastic weighing vessels: a charged sample drifts and will not settle. Ask whether the balance has any anti-static provision and whether an ioniser is available.
  • Levelling. Ask whether there is a spirit level and levelling feet, and make levelling part of the daily check rather than an installation step.

Moisture balances: the result belongs to the method

The halogen and infrared moisture balances here (LBS-0007, LBS-0021) work by drying a sample and recording the loss in mass. That makes them fast and very useful for process control, and it has one consequence worth understanding: the answer depends on the temperature programme and the endpoint rule, so a moisture figure from one instrument is not comparable with one from another unless the programme matches. They are also not automatically equivalent to the oven reference method your specification may require.

So ask: the temperature range and whether the programme can be stepped or ramped; what endpoint criteria are offered, for example a fixed time or a rate-of-change cut-off; whether methods can be stored; the sample pan size and the price of pans, since they are consumable; and whether the supplier can provide a correlation against the oven method for the material you test. Then record the programme you settle on and use the same one every time. Note that the heater reaches a high temperature and the pan is hot at the end of a run, so ask whether a pan handler is supplied.

Spring, suspension and platform scales

The spring balances (LBS-0051 to LBS-0053) are teaching force meters rather than weighing instruments, and they carry a point worth teaching: a spring balance measures force, so one graduated in grams is reading mass only on the assumption of standard gravity. Ask the range and the scale division, whether the scale is in newtons, grams or both, the overload limit, and whether a colour-coded set of several ranges is available, which is what a class needs. The tubular types are the more robust for student use.

For the suspension and platform scales, ask the capacity and the division, the platform size, whether the indicator is separate and how long its cable is, the power arrangement and battery life, and again whether the instrument is verified for trade if anything weighed on it will be sold.

Personal and baby scales are a different product class

Several codes here are personal weighing scales and baby or baby-and-child scales. These are consumer and clinical products rather than laboratory instruments, and three points follow. If a baby scale is to be used for clinical weighing, it is a medical device in most jurisdictions and brings approval and verification obligations in the destination market, so ask what approvals the model holds. If it is for a school or a gymnasium, those obligations do not apply but the scale is also not a laboratory instrument and should not be used as one. And in all cases confirm the stated capacity and division with the supplier in writing before ordering, because a weighing scale is bought on exactly those two numbers and they are the easiest thing in a catalogue to mistype.

Also worth confirming

Quote the code rather than the name. Several product names in this listing are model names rather than descriptions, so they say nothing about capacity or division; one name is a marketing sentence rather than a product name; platform is spelled "plateform" on one code and tubular as "tubalor" on another; and one baby scale name appears to be cut off mid-phrase. Note also that weighing scales appear elsewhere on this site under a different code series, so ask which product you are being quoted. Ask for the display type and whether it is readable at arm's length, the interface if results must be recorded, the draught shield and pan as separate items where relevant, the supply voltage, frequency and plug type for your country, the local service and calibration arrangement, and the warranty. Any accuracy figure quoted is confirmed in writing on the quotation; ask for the conditions behind it.

State the heaviest sample you will weigh, the smallest difference you need to see, and whether the result is reported or traded. For example an analytical balance (LBS-0003) with the repeatability, linearity and corner-load figures stated, an internal calibration or the class of external weight named, and a traceable certificate included; plus confirmation of whether the model is verified for trade use. Frequently asked questions

Why is a four-decimal balance not necessarily accurate to four decimal places?

Because the display shows readability, the smallest increment, which is the figure catalogues quote and the least informative of four. Repeatability, given as a standard deviation, tells you whether weighing the same object ten times gives the same answer, and it limits a real measurement. Linearity is the worst-case deviation across the whole range, which matters when you weigh at both ends of the capacity. Corner-load error is the change in reading when the load sits off-centre; on a top-loading balance it is often the largest error in practice and is almost never quoted. Ask for all four in writing.

How much capacity should we buy?

Less than you might think. A balance is a compromise between capacity and resolution, so buying more capacity than you need costs resolution. Pick a capacity a little above your heaviest sample plus its container rather than the largest you can afford, and ask the pan size, since a sample that overhangs the pan cannot be weighed properly whatever the specification says. When you ask for a quotation, state the heaviest sample, the smallest difference you need to see, and whether the result is reported or traded. For scales, confirm capacity and division in writing, as they are the easiest figures to mistype.

Does the balance need calibration weights, and is it legal for trade?

Those are two separate questions. For calibration, ask whether the balance has internal motorised calibration, which LBS-0001 appears to offer, or needs external weights, and if so which weight class and whether one is supplied, since the wrong class makes calibration meaningless. Ask the recalibration interval and who does it in your country. Legal for trade is a different approval: if a balance weighs anything that is sold, or gives an official result, it generally must be a verified, stamped instrument under national weights and measures law. Most laboratory balances are not, so contact us for the latest copies of the relevant certificates.

Where should an analytical balance be placed?

On a heavy, rigid bench, ideally a stone or anti-vibration table, standing on a solid floor rather than a suspended wooden one. Keep it away from draughts: not under an air-conditioning outlet, beside a door or window, or next to a fume cupboard, and use the draught shield every time. Keep it at a stable temperature, out of direct sun, and left powered; ask the warm-up time from cold. If you weigh powders or use plastic vessels, ask about anti-static provision or an ioniser, because a charged sample drifts. Check the spirit level and levelling feet daily, not just at installation.

Can moisture balance results be compared with oven results?

Not automatically. The halogen and infrared moisture balances (LBS-0007, LBS-0021) dry a sample and record the mass loss, which makes them fast and useful for process control, but the answer depends on the temperature programme and the endpoint rule. A figure from one instrument is comparable with another only if the programme matches, and it is not automatically equivalent to the oven reference method. Ask the temperature range, whether the programme can be stepped or ramped, what endpoint criteria are offered, whether methods can be stored, and whether a correlation against the oven method for your material can be provided.

Are the spring balances and baby scales laboratory instruments?

No, and each needs its own questions. The spring balances (LBS-0051 to LBS-0053) are teaching force meters: a spring measures force, so one graduated in grams reads mass only on the assumption of standard gravity. Ask the range, scale division, units and overload limit, and whether a colour-coded set of ranges is available; tubular types are more robust for students. Personal and baby scales are consumer and clinical products. A baby scale used for clinical weighing is a medical device in most jurisdictions, with approval obligations in the destination market, so ask what approvals the model holds before ordering.

Key takeaways

  • Readability is not accuracy: ask for repeatability, linearity and corner-load error as well as the displayed increment.
  • Capacity costs resolution: choose just above the heaviest sample plus container, and check the pan size.
  • Calibration and trade verification differ: one supports a reported result; the other is a legal approval for weighing goods that are sold.
  • The bench decides: a rigid, draught-free, level bench at stable temperature matters more than the balance itself.
  • Moisture results belong to the method: fix the temperature programme and endpoint rule on LBS-0007 and LBS-0021 and keep them.
  • Spring balances measure force: LBS-0051 to LBS-0053 read grams only on the assumption of standard gravity.
