Quick answer. Before choosing any item, settle the two specifications that decide whether the pieces work together: the ground glass joint size and the glass type. Two pieces fit only if their joint designations match, and only a reduction or expansion adapter such as LG-0001 or LG-0002 bridges a mismatch. Borosilicate takes heating, chilling and flames; neutral hard glass, as in LG-0613, suits storage and routine tubes. So state the joint designation for every piece in the order, the glass you need, and for volumetric items the class.

This is the largest range on the site: laboratory glassware catalogued in the LG series from LG-0001 to LG-0615, across 58 pages. It runs from the joints and adapters that connect everything else, through funnels, flasks, pipettes and tubes, to complete multi-piece assemblies for reaction, distillation, extraction and particle size work. Two specifications decide whether any of it is usable together: the ground glass joint size, and the glass type. Settle both before you order.

Where things are in the 58 pages

The range is grouped by item family, broadly in alphabetical order, with later additions appended at the end rather than merged into their family. This map is from the published listing and saves paging through it blind.

The sequence is not continuous, for example there is no LG-0611 between LG-0610 and LG-0612, and a few LG-coded items appear in other listings on this site. Quote the code exactly as it reads on the item page.

Joint size: the specification that decides compatibility

Most of this range is interchangeable ground glass: a tapered cone on one piece seats into a matching socket on another. Two pieces fit each other only if their joint designations match, and no adapter rescues a mismatch unless it is specifically a reduction or expansion adapter, which is exactly what LG-0001 and LG-0002 are for. So on every enquiry:

  • State the joint designation you work to, and give it for every piece in the order, not just the flask.
  • If you are adding to glassware you already own, measure or read off the joint marking on an existing piece and quote that, rather than ordering by item name alone.
  • For spherical or ball-and-socket connections, give the ball size as well, since those are a separate system from tapered joints. LG-0008 and LG-0009 exist to bridge between the two.
  • For a multi-piece assembly, ask for a drawing or parts list showing every joint, so you can see where a clip, a clamp or an adapter is needed.

Glass type and class

QuestionWhy it matters, and what to ask
Borosilicate or neutral hard glass? Both appear in this range: LG-0613 is listed explicitly as neutral hard glass. Borosilicate withstands thermal shock and is the right choice for anything heated, chilled or used with a flame or mantle. Soda-lime and neutral glasses are cheaper and fine for storage and routine tubes but will not take the same thermal cycling. Ask which glass each code is made from, and for the borosilicate items ask for the grade.
Class A or Class B volumetric?LG-0479 is a Class B volumetric pipette and LG-0480 is Class A supplied with a works certificate. The class is a tolerance band: Class A is the tighter of the two. If a volume is reported in a result, used in a calculation that goes on a certificate, or audited, you need Class A with its certificate. For teaching and routine preparation, Class B is the sensible economy. LG-0481 is Class B with a safety bulb, which is about handling rather than tolerance.
PTFE plug or glass stopcock? The separating funnels are offered both ways. A PTFE plug needs no grease, does not seize, and will not contaminate the sample with grease. A ground glass stopcock is cheaper but needs greasing and can stick if left wet. For student use the PTFE version usually costs less over its life.
Graduated or plain?LG-0147 and LG-0148 are graduated separating funnels. Graduations are useful when the phase volumes matter, and unnecessary when you are only separating.
Stopper type on separating funnelsInterchangeable glass stopper, screw cap, or a ground joint for building into an assembly. The joint version is the one to order if the funnel will sit on top of a reaction flask rather than being used by hand.

Ordering an assembly rather than pieces

The assemblies in this range, including the eight numbered reaction types and the organic chemistry types, are multi-piece sets rather than single items. Before ordering one, ask for the full component list and the joint sizes, whether clips, clamps and a stand are included, and whether the heating source is part of the quote or separate. A reaction assembly quoted without its heating mantle, its clamps or its stand is not a working set-up, and this is the most common gap in a glassware quotation. If the assembly includes a Dewar flask such as LG-0294, note that the listing describes it as supplied without a carrying case or stopper, so order those if you need them.

Practical points on a glassware order

  • Order spares with the set. Glassware breaks. The pieces most often replaced are the ones that get clamped and heated, so order a spare of each at the same time; a single replacement shipped later usually costs more in freight than the item.
  • Packing for export. Ask how the order will be packed and whether each piece is individually boxed. For an export consignment this matters more than the unit price.
  • Capacity and tolerance in writing. Quote the capacity you need, and for volumetric items ask for the stated tolerance, not just the class name.
  • Graduation marking. Ask whether graduations are enamelled or etched. Etched marks survive repeated washing; printed marks do not always.
  • Certificates. If you need a works certificate, say so on the enquiry, because it is a specified extra on some codes and not available on others.

Request a quote

Send the code, the capacity, the joint designation and the glass type for every line, plus the class and whether you need a certificate for volumetric items. For example Separating Funnels with PTFE plug, conical, graduated (LG-0148) in a stated capacity and joint size, or Pipettes-Volumetric One Mark Class A with Works Certificate (LG-0480). Frequently asked questions

How do I make sure the glassware fits together?

State the joint designation you work to for every piece in the order, not just the flask. If you are adding to glassware you already own, read off the joint marking on an existing piece and quote that rather than ordering by item name alone. For spherical or ball-and-socket connections, give the ball size as well, since that is a separate system from tapered joints; LG-0008 and LG-0009 bridge between the two. Only a reduction or expansion adapter, such as LG-0001 or LG-0002, rescues a joint mismatch.

Borosilicate or neutral hard glass?

Both appear in this range, and LG-0613 is listed explicitly as neutral hard glass. Borosilicate withstands thermal shock and is the right choice for anything heated, chilled or used with a flame or heating mantle. Soda-lime and neutral glasses are fine for storage and routine tubes but will not take the same thermal cycling. Ask which glass each code is made from, and for the borosilicate items ask for the grade, so that both are confirmed in writing on the quotation.

Do we need Class A or Class B volumetric pipettes?

The class is a tolerance band, and Class A is the tighter one. LG-0479 is a Class B volumetric pipette, LG-0480 is listed as Class A with a works certificate, and LG-0481 is Class B with a safety bulb, which concerns handling rather than tolerance. If a volume goes into a reported result, a calculation for a certificate or an audit, choose Class A and ask for the stated tolerance, not just the class name. For teaching and routine preparation, Class B is the sensible choice.

PTFE plug or glass stopcock on a separating funnel?

The separating funnels, LG-0141 to LG-0150, are offered both ways. A PTFE plug needs no grease, does not seize, and will not contaminate the sample with grease; a ground glass stopcock needs greasing and can stick if left wet, so for student use the PTFE version is usually the more economical choice over its life. The graduated funnels, LG-0147 and LG-0148, help when phase volumes matter. If the funnel will sit on a reaction flask rather than be used by hand, order the ground joint version.

What should we check before ordering an assembly?

The assemblies, including the eight numbered reaction types and the organic chemistry types, are multi-piece sets. Ask for the full component list and joint sizes, ideally as a drawing, whether clips, clamps and a stand are included, and whether the heating source is part of the quote. A reaction assembly without its heating mantle, clamps or stand is not a working set-up, and that is the most common gap in a glassware quotation. The silvered Dewar flask, LG-0294, is listed without a carrying case or stopper.

How do we find an item in a 615-code range?

The range is grouped by item family, broadly alphabetically: adapters from LG-0001 on page 1, separating funnels LG-0141 to LG-0150 around page 15, assemblies from LG-0294 around page 30, pipettes LG-0476 to LG-0482 and organic chemistry assemblies LG-0483 to LG-0485 around page 45, and later additions LG-0608 to LG-0615 on page 58. The sequence is not continuous - there is no LG-0611 - so quote each code exactly as it reads on the item page, with capacity and joint size.

Key takeaways

  • Joint size first: give the joint designation for every piece in the order, not just the flask.
  • Glass type second: borosilicate for anything heated or chilled; neutral hard glass for storage and routine tubes.
  • Class is a tolerance band: choose Class A where a volume goes into a reported or audited result.
  • PTFE for students: no grease, no seizing and no grease contamination of the sample.
  • Quote the whole set-up: an assembly without mantle, clamps and stand is not a working set-up.
  • Order spares and etched marks: clamped and heated pieces break most, and etched graduations survive repeated washing.
