Cutaway Models: Transmissions, Engine Systems and Valves

Quick answer. This is one of the largest single ranges we manufacture: around 281 sectioned models coded CM-0001 upwards, covering three families. Automotive drivetrain - automatic transmissions, manual gearboxes with clutch, gearboxes with differential, steering boxes. Automotive engine and electrical systems - ignition systems, coil and distributor, starter motors, EGR valves, engine management. And industrial valves and pipework - changeover and three-way plug valves, strainers, backflow preventers, gas meters, orifice flowmeters, with demonstration panels for cathodic protection, pipe cleaning and pipe inspection. A cutaway is worth buying when the thing you need to teach is a path that cannot be seen from outside, and the single best question to ask about any unit here is whether its moving parts can still be operated by hand through their states.

Important, and published rather than hidden: the code CM- is used by two different categories on this site. In this listing CM-0001 is a ZF 3HP automatic transmission. In our cutaways models listing, under a different parent, CM-0001 is a vertical diesel engine, and the two listings overlap for the first twenty numbers while holding entirely different products. So a CM- code on its own does not identify a product. When you order, quote the code and the full product name, and we will confirm both back to you on the quotation. We have flagged the collision for correction; until it is corrected, this is how to avoid receiving a gearbox when you ordered an engine.

Follow the path

A sectioned model is an expensive object, and it is worth its price only where the alternative explanations fail. Drawings are excellent at showing arrangement, and photographs at showing appearance. Both are poor at one specific thing: showing a path through an assembly, and showing that path change. Every genuinely useful cutaway in this range teaches one of three paths.

The power path

In a manual gearbox, which gear pair carries the torque in each ratio, and which pairs are turning freely. In an automatic transmission, which clutches and brakes are applied, and therefore which member of each planetary set is held - the question answered by our epicyclic holding torque apparatus in theory and by a sectioned transmission in metal. In a differential, how torque divides and why one wheel can turn while the other stands still.

This is where the critical buying question applies. A sectioned automatic transmission that cannot be operated is a static display of a very complicated object, and students find it bewildering rather than instructive. One whose clutch packs and brake bands can be applied by hand, with the output turned, lets a class trace the power path in each ratio and discover for themselves why the ratio changes. Ask explicitly: which parts still move, can the ratios be selected by hand, and does the input turn when they are? Get the answer in writing. It is the difference between a teaching instrument and an ornament, and it is rarely on a specification sheet.

The flow path

For a valve, the flow path is the product. A photograph of a backflow preventer shows a bronze casting; a section through it shows two check valves, a relief and the reason the device cannot be defeated by back pressure - which is the entire subject. The same applies to a three-way plug valve, where the point is which two ports connect at each position, to a strainer, where the point is where debris collects and how it is removed, and to a gas or water meter, where the point is the mechanism that converts flow into a count.

For this family ask: is the section cut on the plane that reveals the seat and the seal, and can the valve be operated through its positions with the section in place? A valve cutaway that cannot be moved shows a shape; one that can be moved shows a function.

The circuit and signal path

Ignition systems, coil and distributor assemblies, starter motors, EGR valves and engine management units are in this listing as sectioned and display units. Here the path is electrical or pneumatic rather than mechanical, and the question is whether the display traces it: are the connections brought out and labelled, is the sequence of events marked, and can the unit be turned over to show the sequence happening? For live, instrumented work on these systems rather than sectioned display, see automotive trainers and models and automobile equipments.

What makes a cutaway teach, in order of importance

What to ask forWhy it decides the teaching value
Moving parts retained and operable by handThe path only becomes visible when it changes. This is the first question, not a refinement.
The section plane chosen to reveal the mechanismA unit can be cut open and still conceal the thing it was bought to show. Ask what is visible, not how much was removed.
Colour coding with a labelled keyWithout it a student sees a complicated metal object. With it they see a hydraulic circuit, a power path or a flow route.
A data or instruction sheetFor a lecturer covering twenty units, the sheet is half the value of the purchase, and it is the item most often missing.
Stand, castors and locksA unit that cannot be moved to the class will be used once a year. Ask about rotation too, for units that are read from more than one side.
Drained, degreased and sealedTransmissions and steering boxes are oil-filled in service. Confirm in writing that each unit has been drained and sealed - an assembly that weeps onto a classroom floor is a complaint nobody anticipates.

The valve and pipework family deserves its own attention

We will say plainly what the catalogue structure currently hides: the last part of this listing is not automotive at all. It is a utility and process training range - sectioned valves, strainers, backflow preventers, meters and flowmeters, together with demonstration panels for cathodic protection, pipe cleaning and maintenance, and pipe inspection by camera. Its buyers are water utilities, gas distributors, plumbing and pipefitting programmes and process industry training centres, and they do not search for "cutaway models".

If that is you, these are the questions worth asking:

  • Size and connection standard. A sectioned valve should be a size your trainees will actually meet, and its connections should match the standard used in your network.
  • Whether a cutaway or a working rig is wanted. A sectioned backflow preventer explains the device; a working test rig demonstrates the test. Programmes that certify testers usually need both, and the cutaway first.
  • For the cathodic protection panel: what is measurable - potentials, current - because this subject is taught through measurement rather than observation.
  • For the pipe inspection camera: the length and diameter of pipe it is intended for, and what is supplied to inspect, since a camera with nothing to look into teaches very little.

We have recommended that this family be split into a category of its own. Until it is, tell us what you are training and we will send the relevant part of the range rather than 281 records.

What to tell us when you enquire

  • Which family you need - drivetrain, engine and electrical systems, or valves and pipework - and the topics on your syllabus or training standard.
  • Whether each unit must be operable by hand through its states. Say it explicitly; we will confirm it unit by unit.
  • Whether you want the units on stands, and whether the stands must be mobile.
  • Vehicle types or network standards your trainees work on, so the units match what they will meet.
  • The route into the room, measured at its narrowest point, and any lift capacity - several units in this range are heavy.
  • Destination country, and supply voltage where anything is powered.

Related ranges: cutaways models for sectioned engines and cut-section chassis, engine test rigs for running, instrumented engines, automotive trainers and models for live systems with switched faults, engineering gear models for gear type models, refrigeration lab equipment, and the full mechanical lab equipments category.

Frequently asked questions

Will the transmission still turn, and can the ratios be selected?

Ask us per unit and get the answer in writing, because it is the question that decides whether the model teaches. Sectioning removes material, including material that guided and supported moving parts, so a unit can be cut beautifully and still be immobile. We will tell you which parts rotate, whether the clutches and brakes can be applied by hand, and whether the output turns when they are. If a unit is static, we will say so rather than let you discover it in a class.

Why is the same code used for two different products on your site?

Because product codes have been generated from category names without a check for codes already in use, so two categories both received the CM- prefix and both number from 0001. We have published the collision here rather than hiding it, and flagged it for correction. In the meantime, quote the code and the full product name on any order and we will confirm both; this is the fifth such collision we have found and documented across the catalogue, and the fix is a database task rather than a content one.

Is a cutaway better than a working trainer?

They answer different questions, and a laboratory that can afford one of each learns more than one that buys two of either. A cutaway shows construction and the path through an assembly, which a working unit conceals inside its casing. A working trainer shows behaviour, measurement and fault diagnosis, which a cutaway cannot. The sequence that works in teaching is usually cutaway first, working rig second.

Do you supply sectioned valves in the sizes our network uses?

Tell us the sizes and the connection standard and we will confirm what is available before you order. A sectioned valve two sizes away from anything your trainees handle is a weaker teaching aid than it looks, and connection standards differ between markets, so this is worth settling at the enquiry stage rather than after delivery.

How heavy are these units, and will they fit through our door?

Several are heavy, and the answer decides the delivery plan. Ask us for the mass and the overall dimensions of each unit with its stand, and measure your route at its narrowest point, including lift capacity and any landing or turn. We would rather send dimensions early than resolve a delivery problem on the day, and for the largest items we will say whether a unit ships assembled or is assembled on site.

Can you supply a selection rather than the whole range?

That is the normal case. With 281 records in this listing, nobody buys the category. Send us your syllabus topics or your training standard and the number of trainees, and we will propose a set sized to the teaching, flag where one unit covers two topics, and quote it as one consignment.

Key takeaways

  • Ask first whether the unit still moves. A path only teaches when it can be seen to change; an immobile sectioned transmission bewilders a class rather than instructing it.
  • Buy a cutaway where the path is invisible from outside - power path, flow path, or circuit path. Where a drawing does the job, buy the drawing.
  • Colour coding with a labelled key is the difference between a complicated object and a visible system.
  • A CM- code does not identify a product on this site. Two categories share the prefix and both number from 0001; always order by code and full name.
  • The valve and pipework units are a utility training range, not an automotive one, and should be specified by size and connection standard.
  • Confirm each unit is drained and sealed, and get mass, dimensions and your delivery route settled before ordering.

Notes on this listing, published rather than hidden: the contents were established by reading pages 1, 14 and 27 of 27 live on 15 October 2026, so the description of the families is representative rather than exhaustive. The CM- code collision with our other cutaway listing is described above and flagged for correction. Many records in the drivetrain family carry names that differ only in the number of forward gears, which makes them hard to tell apart in a list; we are rewriting them to lead with the distinguishing feature. The code sequence has gaps within a listing page, which suggests records have been removed or reassigned and needs a database check rather than a guess. One record at the end of this listing carries a completely different prefix and is a magnetic particle non-destructive testing instrument, which does not belong in a cutaway model category; it has been flagged to be moved. All specifications, dimensions, masses and certification claims will be confirmed in writing on the quotation; verify them before tender submission; for certificates, contact us for the latest copies of the relevant certificates.
