Quick answer. Five of the nine items in MTM-0001 to MTM-0009 measure hardness, and the decision that matters is bench Rockwell machine or portable tester. They are not cheaper and dearer versions of the same thing. The bench machine presses a specified indenter under a specified load and reads depth directly; the portable testers measure a rebound velocity or ultrasonic contact property and convert it to a hardness scale through a stored relationship. The practical rule from this page: buy the bench machine for anything you certify, and a portable for anything you cannot carry. Whether results leave your building decides whether you need the bench machine at all.
Nine items, coded MTM-0001 to MTM-0009: a torsion testing machine, a universal testing machine, spring testers in two records, a bench Rockwell hardness tester, and four portable hardness instruments - a portable universal ultrasonic-type tester, a pen type tester, a digital portable metal hardness tester and a set of pencils for pencil hardness testing. The pencils are a coatings consumable rather than a metals instrument; pencil and scratch hardness of paint films is covered in our oil and petroleum testing listing.
Two records describe spring testers with nothing in the listing to separate them, so ask for both specification sheets. Quote the code and the full product name together and have both confirmed on the proforma invoice.
Five of these nine items measure hardness, and the choice between the bench machine and the portable instruments is the most consequential decision on this page - and the one most often got wrong, because the portable instruments display a number on the same scales and look like cheaper versions of the same thing. They are not. They measure a different physical quantity and convert it.
| Bench Rockwell machine | Portable testers | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Presses a specified indenter into the surface under a specified load and reads the depth directly. The result is the Rockwell number | Measures a rebound velocity or an ultrasonic contact property and converts it to a hardness scale through a stored relationship |
| What it needs | The part brought to the machine, properly supported on a suitable anvil, with a reasonably flat and smooth test surface | Access to the surface - that is the point of it. But also a part of sufficient mass and thickness, and a prepared surface |
| Where it fails | Large, installed or awkward parts it cannot accept | Light or thin parts absorb the impact and read low; rough or curved surfaces read high or scatter; and the conversion depends on the material group, so a reading taken with the wrong material setting is simply wrong |
| Verification | Certified test blocks, traceable, at a stated interval | Test blocks too - and they must be of the same material type as the work |
The practical rule: buy the bench machine for anything you certify, and a portable for anything you cannot carry. And when a portable result is reported, report it as what it is - a portable measurement converted to a scale - rather than as a Rockwell number, because conversions between methods and between scales are approximate and the person reading your certificate is entitled to know which instrument produced it.
For the bench Rockwell machine, ask what scales are covered and what indenters and loads are included, since the scale is chosen from the material and the thickness and a machine without the right indenter cannot run the scale your specification names; what anvils come with it; what certified test blocks are supplied and at what hardness values; and the recalibration interval and local cost. More on choosing a hardness scale, across metals, rubber, foam and other materials, is on our hardness testing machines page.
For the portable instruments, ask: the minimum mass and minimum thickness of part each can measure, and what support or coupling is needed below that; the surface finish required; which material groups the conversion covers and how the setting is changed; what test block is supplied; and whether readings can be logged, because a portable instrument used for a survey of a large component is only useful if the readings can be tied to positions.
Torsion is the other half of a mechanical testing laboratory and it is often missing, which is a pity, because the shear modulus and the torsional behaviour of a bar are where several design calculations start. Four things to settle.
How is the twist measured? The angle applied by the drive includes the twist of the whole load train - the chucks, the couplings and the machine itself. For a modulus determination the twist has to be measured on the specimen itself over a defined gauge length, with a troptometer or a pair of angular scales, exactly as strain is measured on a tensile specimen rather than from crosshead travel. Ask what is supplied and what gauge length it uses.
Capacity and resolution. Ask the maximum torque and the accuracy as a percentage of reading with the lower limit of the valid range, since a machine sized for steel shafts cannot resolve the torque on a thin brass wire. Specimen gripping: hexagonal or square ends in matching chucks are the usual arrangement, and a specimen that slips in the grips produces a stiffness reading that is the grip rather than the material. And guarding: a torsion specimen stores energy and fails suddenly, so ask what shield or enclosure covers the specimen and where the operator stands.
Spring rate testing looks simple and has one specification that decides whether an instrument is usable: resolution at the low end. A tester sized for heavy compression springs will not resolve the rate of a light extension spring, and a spring tester is normally bought for a particular family of springs rather than for everything. So ask the load range, the resolution, and the accuracy as a percentage of reading rather than of full scale.
Then ask what it measures besides load: free length, solid length and load at a stated length are what a spring drawing specifies, so a tester that reads length as well as load is doing the whole job. Ask about the platens and whether fixtures for extension springs - hooks and pulling arrangements - are included, and whether the instrument can be used for a load-deflection curve rather than single points.
One record here is a universal testing machine, and it is specified properly in our universal testing machines listing: frame type, load cell capacity and accuracy class, the verification certificate and class that an auditor asks for first, fixtures for tension, compression and bending, extensometry, and the software questions. If a machine rather than an instrument is what you are buying, start on that page and quote from it - and if you need tension and bending as well as the hardness and torsion work on this page, a single universal frame with the right fixtures may be the better purchase than several single-purpose machines.
For the bench hardness machine: scales covered, indenters and loads supplied, anvils, certified test blocks with their values, calibration certificate, traceability and recalibration interval and cost. For the portable instruments: measuring principle, minimum part mass and thickness, surface finish requirement, material groups covered and how the setting is changed, test block supplied, data logging, battery life and probe spares. For the torsion machine: torque capacity and accuracy as a percentage of reading, twist measurement on the specimen with its gauge length, grip arrangement, guarding and bolt-down. For the spring testers: load range, resolution, length measurement, fixtures for compression and extension springs, and whether a curve can be recorded. For everything: mass, footprint, services, nominal voltage, frequency and plug pattern, consumables and spares with prices, and the warranty and local service position. For any certification stated here, contact us for the latest copies of the relevant certificates before you tender on it.
Related ranges: universal testing machines and tensile testing machines for load frames, hardness testing machines for hardness across other materials, the strength of materials lab range for the teaching apparatus behind these tests, and testing lab trainers for electrical test instrumentation. The full set is listed under testing machines. For a quotation, tell us the destination country, the material and the scale your specifications name, the largest and smallest parts you test, and whether results leave your building - that last answer decides whether you need the bench machine at all.
No. The portable testers here (the ultrasonic-type, pen type and digital portable metal hardness testers) display a number on the same scales, but they measure a different physical quantity, a rebound velocity or an ultrasonic contact property, and convert it through a stored relationship. That conversion depends on the material group, so a reading taken on the wrong material setting is simply wrong. Light or thin parts absorb the impact and read low, and rough or curved surfaces read high or scatter. Both types need test blocks, and for a portable they must match the work's material type.
When you certify results, or when results leave your building. The bench machine needs the part brought to it on a suitable anvil with a reasonably flat, smooth test surface, and it reads the Rockwell number directly. A portable is for parts you cannot carry: large, installed or awkward components. When a portable result is reported, report it as a portable measurement converted to a scale rather than as a Rockwell number, because conversions between methods and scales are approximate and the reader is entitled to know which instrument produced it.
Which scales are covered and which indenters and loads are included, because the scale is chosen from the material and its thickness, and a machine without the right indenter cannot run the scale your specification names. Ask which anvils come with it, which test blocks are supplied and at what hardness values, the traceability of the calibration, and the recalibration interval and local arrangement. For certificates, contact us for the latest copies of the relevant certificates. If you also need tension and bending, consider whether one universal frame with fixtures serves better.
The measuring principle of each; the minimum part mass and thickness it can measure, and what support or coupling is needed below that; the surface finish required; which material groups the conversion covers and how the setting is changed; which test block is supplied; and whether readings can be logged, because a survey of a large component is only useful if readings can be tied to positions. Ask also the battery life and the availability of probe spares. Note that the pencil set is a coatings consumable for paint films, not a metals instrument.
How the twist is measured: the drive angle includes the twist of the chucks, couplings and machine, so for a shear modulus the twist must be measured on the specimen over a defined gauge length with a troptometer or a pair of angular scales; ask what is supplied and the gauge length. Capacity and resolution: ask maximum torque and accuracy as a percentage of reading with the lower limit of the valid range. Gripping: hexagonal or square ends in matching chucks, since a slipping specimen measures the grip. And guarding, because a specimen stores energy and fails suddenly.
The listing gives nothing to separate them, so ask for both specification sheets. A spring tester is normally bought for a particular family of springs, and its deciding specification is resolution at the low end: one sized for heavy compression springs will not resolve a light extension spring. Ask the load range, the resolution and the accuracy as a percentage of reading rather than full scale; whether it measures free length, solid length and load at a stated length; the platens and extension spring hooks; and whether it can record a load-deflection curve.

Specifications for MTM-0001 to MTM-0009, including hardness scales, indenters and loads, test blocks, minimum part mass, torque capacity and spring tester load range, are confirmed in writing on the quotation. For certificates, contact us for the latest copies of the relevant certificates. No price is quoted on this page. Listing notes: two records describe spring testers with nothing to separate them; the pencil hardness set is a coatings consumable rather than a metals instrument; and the page names the items but does not map each one to its MTM code, so quote the full product name with the code and have both confirmed on the proforma invoice.

· The test is exceptionally easy to do, will give uniform outcomes, and is tried and true in light of the fact that the pencils are evaluated. The review of the pencil is controlled by the measure of heated graphite and mud in its organization.
· Grading pencils arrive in a collection of both hard and delicate, and can be found in most workmanship or office supply stores.
· The set I have comprises of twelve pencils, extending in hardness from 4H to 6B. The 'H' remains for hardness, the 'B' remains for darkness, and HB is for hard and dark pencils. The hardest is a 9H, trailed by 8H, 7H, 6H, 5H, 4H, 3H, 2H, and H. F is the center of the hardness scale; at that point comes HB, B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B, and 9B, which is the mildest. Another evaluating technique utilizes numbers; the counterparts would be #1=B, #2=HB, #2-1/2=F, #3=H, and #4=2H. The most generally utilized written work pencil is the #2 (HB review), which is genuinely delicate, contains more graphite, and leaves a dull stamp.
· To do your own pencil hardness testing, dependably begin with a dry, perfect, all around sanded bit of wood.
· The pencil hardness test is just a single of numerous tests that are done to assess a covering's execution.
