Testing Equipment: chambers, flexible-material hardness, water analysis and test rigs

Quick answer. This listing holds 41 instruments, TE-0001 to TE-0041, and they fall into five families that have little to do with each other: environmental and stability chambers (walk-in incubator, stability and photostability chambers, environmental chamber, corrosion autoclaves), hardness and compression set testing of flexible materials (three indentation hardness testers, compression set apparatus, foam pounding tester), surface and fastness testing (crock meter, rotating drum abrasion, pilling tester, vamp flex tester), water and analytical instruments (pH meters, spectrophotometer, nephelometer, ion-specific meters, water and soil analysis kits), and thermal and fluid test rigs (Pelton turbine, wind tunnel, compressor and refrigeration rigs, composite walls apparatus). If you want one thing from this page, take this: for a chamber, the specification that matters is not the temperature range it reaches but the uniformity and fluctuation it holds across a loaded working volume.

Does the chamber hold the condition, or only reach it?

Chambers are the largest coherent family in this listing and the one where buyers are most often sold the wrong specification. Every chamber datasheet leads with a temperature range and a humidity range. Those are the two numbers that matter least.

A chamber does one job: hold a defined condition, everywhere inside it, for as long as the test runs, with the load in place. Four specifications describe whether it can, and you should ask for all four in writing:

  • Uniformity, also called spatial variation. The spread of temperature between points within the working volume at a given moment. This is the figure that decides whether specimens at the back of a loaded chamber are at the same condition as those at the front, and it is the figure most often absent from a quotation.
  • Fluctuation, also called temporal variation. How much the condition swings at one point over time as the control cycles. A chamber with tight fluctuation and poor uniformity looks excellent on a single sensor and is still unfit.
  • Recovery after a door opening. Real use involves putting things in and taking them out. Ask how long the chamber takes to return to the set point and to within uniformity after the door has been open for a stated time, because that period is lost test time and, in a long stability study, a documented excursion.
  • Performance with the load you will actually put in. Specifications are normally determined empty. A chamber packed with specimens, or with trays that block airflow, behaves differently. Tell us your load and your shelf arrangement.

Two further points that decide whether a chamber survives an audit:

Mapping. A chamber used for work anyone else relies on should be mapped - multiple sensors distributed through the working volume, logged over a period, loaded and empty - and re-mapped periodically and after any relocation or repair. Mapping is a service, not a feature of the box, and it should be budgeted at purchase rather than discovered at the first inspection.

Recording and alarms. For any study that runs for weeks, the record is the deliverable. Ask what is logged, at what interval, where it is stored, whether the log can be exported in a form you can archive, and what happens if the power fails at two in the morning: does the chamber restart at its set point, and is there an alarm that reaches a person? A stability study with a gap in its record has a gap in its conclusion.

The photostability chamber deserves a specific note: it controls light exposure as well as temperature, so the specification includes the lamp type, the illumination and the near-ultraviolet energy delivered, plus lamp hours and a replacement schedule. Lamps age and their output falls. A photostability chamber without a lamp-hours record is delivering an unknown exposure.

Hardness and compression set on flexible materials: a different quantity entirely

This listing holds three indentation hardness testers, including one for polyurethane foam, plus compression set apparatus and a repeated compression set tester. These measure something fundamentally different from the metal hardness testers in our metal testing machines range, and the difference is worth stating plainly because the word "hardness" hides it.

On metals, hardness is resistance to permanent indentation, and the result is read from the size or depth of a permanent impression. On foams and elastomers, there is no permanent impression - the material recovers. What is measured instead is the force needed to indent the surface by a specified amount with a specified indentor, or the indentation produced by a specified force. The result therefore depends on:

  • The indentor geometry and the foot area. Change either and the number changes.
  • The specified indentation or force, and the dwell at it. Viscoelastic materials keep moving under load, so the reading is taken at a defined time, not when the operator chooses.
  • Specimen thickness and backing. A thin specimen on a hard bench reads the bench. Methods specify minimum thickness for exactly this reason.
  • Temperature. Elastomer and foam stiffness is strongly temperature dependent, which is why the vamp flex tester in this listing exists in a low temperature model: flexing behaviour at a low temperature is a different property from flexing at room temperature, and for footwear sold into cold markets it is the property that matters.

Compression set is a separate question: how much permanent deformation remains after the material has been held compressed by a specified amount, at a specified temperature, for a specified time, and then allowed to recover for a specified period. All four of those numbers are part of the result. The repeated compression set tester and the pounding tester answer the durability version of the same question, cycling the load rather than holding it, which is closer to what a cushion actually experiences.

A caution on this group of records: three indentation hardness testers appear in this listing under names that differ only by a word. They are genuine variants - analog, and a version configured for polyurethane foam - but the names do not make the difference clear, and we are rewriting them so that a buyer can tell which is which without asking.

Surface, fastness and abrasion

The crock meter tests colour fastness to rubbing - whether colour transfers to a dry or wet rubbing cloth - and it is the instrument behind most complaints about a garment marking skin or upholstery. The rotating drum abrasion tester measures wear resistance of rubber by a different principle from the rotary platform abrasers used on textiles. The pilling tester produces the surface fuzzing and bobbling that customers notice before anything else about a fabric. The water vapour absorption tester addresses comfort properties.

All four share one requirement that is easy to overlook: the rubbing cloth, the abrasive wheel, the abradant fabric and the standard reference material are consumables, and they are the test. A crock meter with a batch of rubbing cloth from an unspecified source is not running the method, and an abradant that has been used past its service life gives results that drift in the flattering direction. Buy the specified consumables with the instrument, record the batch on the test report, and treat them as a recurring cost.

Textile and leather testing is covered in depth in our fabric testing equipment and footwear testing equipment ranges, and paper and board in paper and packaging testing equipment.

Water and analytical instruments: the electrode is the consumable

The pH meters, spectrophotometer, nephelometer, ion-specific meters and water and soil analysis kits in this listing serve environmental and agricultural laboratories, water utilities and teaching laboratories. One point governs all of them.

An analytical instrument is only as good as the standards you calibrate it with, and most of the running cost is in consumables rather than the instrument. For pH, the electrode is a wearing part with a finite life - typically a year or two in routine use, shorter in dirty or hot samples - and it must be calibrated against fresh buffer solutions, at the temperature of measurement, across the range you work in. A pH meter that reads to two decimal places and is calibrated with old buffers is precisely wrong. For turbidity, the result depends on the calibration standards and on their preparation. For spectrophotometry, wavelength accuracy needs periodic verification against a reference.

So when you enquire, tell us your sample matrix and your throughput, and ask us for the consumable list and its expected life alongside the instrument price. We will give you both figures; the second one is usually the larger over five years.

Thermal and fluid test rigs, and a compliance point on refrigerants

The Pelton turbine test rig, wind tunnel, single and double stage air compressor rigs, refrigeration test rig, composite walls apparatus and air flow tester in this listing are teaching and research rigs rather than testing instruments. They belong with the mechanical and thermal engineering range, and our engineering apparatus and civil engineering lab equipments categories cover that work in depth.

One point has to be raised before any refrigeration or air conditioning rig is ordered, and we raise it at the enquiry stage rather than at the border: ask which refrigerant the rig is charged with, and whether that refrigerant may lawfully be imported, sold and serviced in your country. Refrigerants are controlled internationally under the Montreal Protocol and its Kigali Amendment, national phase-down schedules differ, and a rig charged with a refrigerant your market is phasing out is a rig you cannot service in a few years even if you can import it today. Tell us the destination country and we will confirm the charge in writing. The same question applies to the gas in any sealed-system demonstration apparatus.

The lyophilizer in this listing is a freeze drying system - a preparation and process instrument used in pharmaceutical, food and biological work rather than a test instrument. We supply it; it is simply filed in the wrong place, and we have flagged that.

A note on this listing, published rather than hidden. This category is a catch-all. Its 41 records span textile, footwear, foam, rubber, rock, water, pharmaceutical, electrical machine and thermal engineering work, and no single subject describes it; we have described the families instead. Specific observations we have flagged for correction: the stability, photostability, environmental and walk-in chambers are a substantial product family that deserves its own category, because buyers search for them by name and they are currently invisible inside a general listing; a Doppler radar training system and several teaching rigs sit in a testing category while a peel strength tester sits in a category named for trainers; a lyophilizer is a process instrument rather than a test instrument; one product name carries the padding phrase "for Research Institutes", which we are removing as we are removing similar padding elsewhere; "pH" is written in lower case in two records; and a compression set apparatus appears both here and in our general testing index, which needs a database check rather than a guess.

What to tell us when you enquire

  • For a chamber: the conditions you must hold, the tolerance your method or regulator requires, the working volume and the load, whether you need light control, and whether the data log has to satisfy an auditor.
  • For hardness or compression set: the material, the method named by your customer, and the specimen thickness you can supply.
  • For fastness and abrasion: the standard, and whether you can obtain the specified consumables locally.
  • For analytical instruments: sample matrix, range, throughput, and whether buffers and standards are available where you are.
  • For any rig: what the students or researchers must be able to measure, not only what the rig should demonstrate - the instrumentation is where these quotations differ.
  • Destination country, supply voltage and frequency, and shipping mode.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between uniformity and fluctuation in a chamber specification?

Uniformity is the spread between different points inside the chamber at the same moment; fluctuation is the variation at one point over time. A chamber can be excellent at one and poor at the other. Uniformity decides whether every specimen experiences the same condition, and it is the figure most often missing from a quotation. Ask for both, determined over a stated period, and ask whether they were determined empty or loaded.

Do I need chamber mapping, or is the factory certificate enough?

If your results are only for internal development, the factory certificate may be sufficient. If they go to a customer, a regulator or an auditor, you will be asked for a mapping report for the chamber as installed, with the load you actually use, repeated periodically and after any move or major repair. Budget it at purchase. A chamber bought without a mapping plan is usually mapped in a hurry during an inspection.

Why does foam hardness need a different instrument from metal hardness?

Because it measures a different quantity. Metal hardness is read from a permanent indentation; foam and elastomers recover, so what is measured is the force for a specified indentation, or the indentation under a specified force, at a specified dwell time. The indentor geometry, the dwell and the specimen thickness are all part of the result, and a metal hardness tester cannot produce that measurement.

How long does a pH electrode last?

In routine laboratory use, commonly one to two years, and less in hot, dirty or high-solids samples or if it is allowed to dry out. It is a wearing part, not a permanent fitting. Judge it by its response: an electrode that drifts, responds slowly or will not calibrate against fresh buffers has reached the end of its life regardless of its age. Order a spare with the meter, and keep fresh buffers rather than economising on them.

Can you supply a refrigeration test rig to any country?

Tell us the destination first. Refrigerants are controlled internationally and national phase-down schedules differ, so a charge that is routine in one market may be restricted in another, and a rig you cannot service locally in a few years is a poor purchase even if it clears customs today. We will confirm in writing which refrigerant a rig is charged with so that you can check it against your own regulations before ordering.

Why are such different instruments in one category?

Because this category was used as a catch-all as the catalogue grew. We have said so above rather than writing copy that implies a coherence it does not have, described the families as they are, and flagged the chambers in particular to be given their own category. If you tell us what you are testing we will point you to the right range in one reply.

Key takeaways

  • For a chamber, uniformity and fluctuation under load beat temperature range as the specification that decides fitness. Ask for both, plus recovery time after a door opening.
  • Budget mapping and logging at purchase if anyone outside your laboratory will rely on the results.
  • Photostability lamps age. Without a lamp-hours record, the exposure delivered is unknown.
  • Foam and elastomer hardness is a different quantity from metal hardness - indentor geometry, dwell time and specimen thickness are part of the result.
  • In fastness, abrasion and analytical work the consumable is the test. Specify rubbing cloths, abradants, buffers and standards with the instrument and record the batch.
  • Ask which refrigerant a rig is charged with and whether it is lawful and serviceable in your market, before ordering.
