Fabric Testing Equipment

Fabric Testing Equipment Lab Equipment Manufacturer, Supplier and Exporter in India

Ray Export is a leading manufacturer and supplier of Fabric Testing Equipment in India,

Quick answer. Name the test standards your buyers use before choosing any instrument, then budget for condition, calibrate and consume. Nearly every test in FTE-0001 to FTE-0022 exists in several versions that differ in specimen size, pre-treatment, cycles and how results are expressed, and an instrument built to a version your customer does not recognise produces reports they will not accept. Then cost what quotations usually leave out: conditioning, because fabric properties change with humidity; reference materials such as grey scales and pilling standards; and consumables, which on some instruments outrun the purchase price within a few years.

What this range covers

Twenty-two instruments, coded FTE-0001 to FTE-0022, for a textile testing laboratory. They fall into five groups: mechanical and surface properties - pilling, Martindale abrasion and pilling, stiffness, crease recovery, drape, thickness, snap pull-out strength, flat loop flexibility and a traverse thread counter; permeability and water behaviour - air permeability, water vapour permeability, a water penetration tester for very low ranges and a Bundesmann rain simulation apparatus; colour fastness - a colour matching cabinet, a launderometer and a perspirometer; sample preparation and environment - a conditioning chamber, a Beasley balance and a beaker dyeing machine; and exposure and coated-fabric work - an exposure rack, a coating adhesion tester for vinyl coated fabric and a De Mattia flex tester.

If you are equipping a laboratory whose reports go to a customer, specify the standard before the instrument. Nearly every test here exists in several national and international versions, and the versions differ in specimen size, pre-treatment, number of cycles and how the result is expressed. Tell us which standard your buyers name - and if your customers are in different markets, tell us all of them - because an instrument built to a standard your customer does not recognise cannot produce a report they will accept, however good the instrument is.

The Three Cs of a textile test house: Condition, Calibrate, Consume

Textile testing differs from most mechanical testing in three ways, and all three cost money that is routinely left out of a quotation.

Condition. Textile properties are not fixed. Strength, extension, stiffness and mass per unit area all change with the moisture the fibre holds, and that changes with the air around it. This is why the test standards specify a standard atmosphere and a conditioning period before testing - commonly twenty degrees Celsius and sixty-five per cent relative humidity, with a tropical alternative near twenty-seven degrees; check the figure in the standard you work to. The practical consequence is blunt: a result measured on an unconditioned specimen is not comparable with anything, including your own result from last week. The conditioning chamber, FTE-0014, is therefore not an accessory to this range; it is the condition under which the rest of it produces usable numbers. If the budget will not stretch to everything at once, buy the conditioning chamber and fewer instruments rather than the reverse.

Calibrate. Several instruments here are only meaningful against a reference material rather than against a dial - grey scales for assessing colour change and staining, photographic or physical pilling standards for rating a pilled specimen, standard abradant fabric and felt for the Martindale, and reference fabrics for the launderometer. Ask which reference materials each instrument needs, who supplies them, what they cost and how often they must be replaced, because a worn grey scale or a faded photographic standard moves every rating a laboratory issues, quietly and in one direction.

Consume. The running cost of a textile laboratory is consumables, not electricity. On this range that means abradant cloth, felts and foam for the abrasion and pilling testers; reference detergent and steel balls for the launderometer; perspiration reagents made to the standard recipe; lamps for the colour matching cabinet; and specimen cutting dies that blunt. Ask for a one-year consumable list with prices and lead times for each instrument before you compare machine prices; on some of these instruments the consumables outrun the purchase price within a few years.

The colour group, and the thing that goes wrong with it

Colour assessment is where a textile laboratory most often produces numbers it should not stand behind, and the cause is almost always the light.

A colour matching cabinet is a set of specified illuminants in a controlled enclosure - typically daylight plus a store lighting source and a filament source, so that metamerism can be seen. Two questions decide whether it works. Which illuminants does it contain, and do they match the ones your customer specifies? And how are lamp hours logged and when are lamps replaced? Fluorescent and filament lamps shift in output and colour as they age, and a cabinet with lamps past their rated hours produces assessments that drift away from everyone else. Ask whether the cabinet has an hour meter, what the replacement interval is and what a set of lamps costs.

Then the human part: a visual assessment needs a trained observer, a neutral grey surround, a fixed viewing geometry and ideally two assessors. If your reports need numbers rather than ratings, a spectrophotometer is the instrument for that, and colour measurement instruments are listed in the plastic testing equipment range. For the launderometer and perspirometer, ask about temperature control and uniformity between pots, and about the availability of reference detergent in your country - it is a specified material and it is not always easy to buy locally.

Abrasion, pilling and the Martindale question

FTE-0008 is a combined abrasion and pilling tester, FTE-0004 a dedicated pilling tester. Three things decide whether a specification is comparable with your customer's: the number of test stations, since throughput is stations multiplied by cycle time and a single-station machine is a bottleneck in a commercial laboratory; the cycle counter and whether it stops automatically at a set count; and the specified abradant, felt and foam, which are the consumables that govern the result. Ask also how specimens are cut and mounted, because a specimen cut slightly oversize abrades at its edge rather than its face and the rating is then wrong in a way that is hard to spot.

Pilling ratings are assigned by comparison with standard photographs or replicas under controlled light, which brings the colour section above back into play: pilling assessment under ordinary room lighting is not an assessment.

Permeability, water and the Bundesmann

Four instruments cover the passage of air and water. For the air permeability tester, ask the test area, the pressure differential it works at and whether that matches your standard, since both vary between standards. For water vapour permeability, ask which method the instrument implements, because the upright cup, inverted cup and desiccant methods are not interchangeable and give different numbers for the same fabric.

For the Bundesmann rain tester and the water penetration tester, the practical issue is water. Ask what water quality the instrument needs and whether a supply and drain are required at the position: hard water scales spray nozzles, and a scaled nozzle changes the droplet pattern, which is the whole experiment. Ask also about the absorbent paper, blotting and specimen holders these methods use, and whether the test is run at a controlled temperature.

Three items in this listing that are not plain fabric tests

We would rather point these out than have you find them after ordering. The exposure rack, the coating adhesion tester for vinyl coated fabric and the De Mattia flex tester are coated-fabric instruments, and the dedicated coated fabric testing equipment listing holds only four products - so if coated fabrics are your subject, ask for both listings to be quoted together rather than choosing between them. An exposure rack appears in each of the two listings under the same name. And the beaker dyeing machine, FTE-0003, is a laboratory dyeing machine rather than a testing instrument: it is here because a dye house uses it alongside testing, but it brings dyes, auxiliaries and effluent with it, so ask about chemical supply and drainage before it is installed.

As a general rule on this part of the catalogue: quote the code and the full product name together, and ask for both to be confirmed on the proforma invoice. Several instruments in neighbouring listings share names, and a code alone is not enough to identify what will be shipped.

If you are working towards laboratory accreditation

If the laboratory is to be accredited rather than simply useful, the instrument list is the smaller half of the task. Accreditation to the international standard for testing laboratories requires documented methods, demonstrated competence, traceable calibration of each instrument on a stated interval, recorded environmental conditions and participation in inter-laboratory comparison where it exists. When you enquire, tell us that accreditation is the aim and ask us, instrument by instrument, what calibration certificate is supplied, what it is traceable to, which parameters are certified, and what a local recalibration costs. For any certification we state for an instrument, contact us for the latest copies of the relevant certificates before you rely on it in a tender or an accreditation file.

What to ask for on the quotation

The standard and version each instrument is built to, named explicitly; test area, specimen size and specimen preparation requirement; number of stations and cycle time where relevant; the reference materials and consumables each instrument needs, with one-year prices and lead times; calibration certificate, traceability and recalibration interval; services required at the position - power, water, drain, compressed air, extraction; bench or floor mounting, mass and footprint; nominal voltage, frequency and plug pattern; software, where an instrument is computerised, with its licence terms and whether the instrument can be read manually; and the warranty, commissioning and local service position.

Related ranges in this group: leather testing equipment, footwear testing equipment, paper and packaging testing equipment, rubber testing equipment, and for tensile strength on fabric and yarn, tensile testing machines and universal testing machines. The full set is listed under raw products testing. For a quotation, tell us the destination country, the standards your customers name, your expected sample throughput and the syllabus or tender specification you are working to.

Frequently asked questions

Why should the conditioning chamber FTE-0014 come first?

Because textile properties are not fixed. Strength, extension, stiffness and mass per unit area all change with the moisture the fibre holds, and that follows the surrounding air. Test standards therefore specify a standard atmosphere and a conditioning period, commonly 20 deg C and 65 per cent relative humidity, with a tropical alternative near 27 deg C; check the figure in the standard you use. A result measured on an unconditioned specimen is not comparable with anything, including your own result from last week. If the budget is tight, buy the conditioning chamber and fewer instruments rather than the reverse.

What reference materials and consumables will we need?

More than the machine list suggests. Several instruments are only meaningful against a reference: grey scales for colour change and staining, photographic or physical pilling standards, standard abradant fabric and felt for the Martindale, and reference fabrics, reference detergent and steel balls for the launderometer. Add perspiration reagents made to the standard recipe, lamps for the colour matching cabinet and cutting dies that blunt. A worn grey scale or faded pilling photograph moves every rating a laboratory issues, quietly and in one direction. Ask for a one-year consumable list with lead times for each instrument before comparing machines.

How do we make colour fastness assessments reliable?

Control the light and the observer. A colour matching cabinet holds specified illuminants, typically daylight, a store lighting source and a filament source so metamerism can be seen; check they match the illuminants your customer specifies. Lamps shift in output and colour as they age, so ask whether the cabinet has an hour meter and what the replacement interval is. A visual assessment also needs a trained observer, a neutral grey surround, a fixed viewing geometry and ideally two assessors. For the launderometer and perspirometer, ask about temperature uniformity between pots and whether reference detergent can be bought locally.

What should we compare on the abrasion and pilling testers?

FTE-0008 is a combined Martindale abrasion and pilling tester and FTE-0004 a dedicated pilling tester. Compare three things. The number of test stations, since throughput is stations multiplied by cycle time and a single-station machine is a bottleneck in a commercial laboratory. The cycle counter, and whether it stops automatically at a set count. And the specified abradant, felt and foam, which govern the result. Ask how specimens are cut and mounted, because an oversize specimen abrades at its edge rather than its face. Pilling is rated against standard photographs under controlled light, not ordinary room lighting.

What decides the air permeability, water vapour and rain test results?

Method details. For the air permeability tester, ask the test area and pressure differential, since both vary between standards and must match yours. For water vapour permeability, ask which method the instrument implements, because the upright cup, inverted cup and desiccant methods give different numbers for the same fabric. For the Bundesmann rain tester and the water penetration tester, the issue is water: ask what water quality is needed and whether a supply and drain are required, because hard water scales spray nozzles and a scaled nozzle changes the droplet pattern. Ask also about blotting materials and specimen holders.

Which items in this listing are not plain fabric tests?

Four. The exposure rack, the coating adhesion tester for vinyl coated fabric and the De Mattia flex tester are coated-fabric instruments, and the coated fabric testing listing holds only four products, so if coated fabrics are your subject, ask for both listings to be quoted together. The exposure rack appears in both listings under the same name. The beaker dyeing machine FTE-0003 is a laboratory dyeing machine rather than a testing instrument, and it brings dyes, auxiliaries and effluent, so ask about chemical supply and drainage first. Quote code and full name together, because neighbouring listings share names.

Key takeaways

  • Standard before instrument: name every standard your buyers use, since versions differ in specimen, cycles and reporting.
  • Condition first: buy FTE-0014 and fewer instruments rather than more instruments and no conditioning.
  • References move ratings: worn grey scales or faded pilling standards shift every result in one direction.
  • Cost a year of consumables: abradants, felts, detergent, reagents, lamps and dies can outrun the machine price.
  • Light decides colour work: match the cabinet's illuminants to your customer and log lamp hours.
  • Accreditation is more than instruments: it needs documented methods, competence, calibration on an interval and recorded conditions.
